-

Kilcummin 3-11 Spa 1-15

KILCUMMIN won the Tatler Jack East Kerry Minor C Championship title away against Spa last Saturday.

In a fast moving game of two halves, Kilcummin got off to a dream start with a Paul O’Shea point from the throw in, followed with a Conor McCarthy goal, in the fourth minute.

The goal provided by Paul O’Shea set up with a great pass from Sean O’Leary. Play moved from end to end with both teams creating scoring chances. However, Kilcummin goal keeper Keith O’Leary denied Spa a number of goals, with great blocks.

The home side were unlucky with a number of wides, but recorded four points, Eoin O’Carroll, after a surging run forward and Niall McCarthy(3), in moves involving Gary Vaughan, Ruairi O’Keeffe andSean Cahill. Meanwhile, Kilcummin kept the scoreboard ticking over and notched up points, Paul O’Shea(3), Thomas O’Connor (2).

In a decisive move, Conor McCarthy rattled the Spa net for the visitors second goal on the 27th minute. The goal came with a Thomas O’Connor interception. The impressive Paul O’Shea laid off to Sean O’Leary, with a nice cross and Conor McCarthy gave the goalie no chance with a rasper to the Spa net. Half time score was Kilcummin 2-6 Spa 0-4.

The second half saw Spa play with renewed determination and reduce the margin to two points in the last quarter. The third quarter was evenly balanced. The sides traded points before Eoin O’Carroll found the net for a Spa goal, showing quick reflexes to capitalise on an opportunity in defence and send a rasper to the back of the net – 2-7 to 1-5, on the 24th minute.

However, the Kilcummin response was immediate. James Nagle, who had moved to the forwards, replacing the injured Conor McCarthy, lopped the ball over the keepers head from a lovely pass by Lorcan O’Connor, in a move started when Eoin Daly won the ball.

The final fifteen minutes saw the home side notch up five points without reply, reducing the margin to a single score 1-12 to 3-9 in favour of Kilcummin, on the 26th minute – from the boots of Niall McCarthy (3), Conor Stack and Paul O’Shea.

Kilcummin created scoring opportunities only to see a number of shots trail wide. In an exciting end to the game both sides pressed forward. Kilcummin goal keeper, Keith O’Leary put over a magnificant point from a 35m free, increasing the lead to four points.

Niall McCarthy, who shone for Spa picked off two points – 3-10 to 1-14 on the 29th minute. With excitement rising a well taken Niall McCarthy point had the minimum between the sides with the game in added time. The outstanding Paul O’Shea scored the insurance point for Kilcummin and when Kilcummin won posession after the kick out, the final whistle sounded.

East Kerry Vice Chairman Johnny Brosnan presented the trophy to Kilcummin captain Sean O’Leary.
