KCYMS peg back fast-starting St Brendans to run out winners in U12 Division 1

ST Brendans were fastest out of the blocks in this away game in Killorglin, and by the end of quarter one, had opened up a 10-2 lead on KCYMS. Mark Lynch and Rory Hannifin were controllin­g the game for St Brendans while Alex Garry and Patrick Radney were trying hard for KCYMS.

The second quarter was a reverse of the first, with KCYMS dominating. They scored 22 points in this quarter to lead 24-18 at halftime with Dara Hogan, Darragh Foley and Eoin O’Connell doing the damage. Jamie McCarthy and Liam O’Connor were playing great defence in this quarter for St Brendans.

Q3 saw both teams exchanging score for score with Jake Sparks, Conor Buckley, Cian Kissane and Rian Hogan showing for KCYMS, while for St Brendans John Murphy and Mark Lynch were looking very composed on the ball.

The final quarter saw St Brendans throw everything at KCYMS, but KCYMS were just a little stronger and this made the difference in the end. Niall O’Brien and Denis McGreever were controllin­g the ball out top for KCYMS while Donal Kirby and Harry Watford gave 100% for St Brendans.

MEN’S DIVISION 1 Gneeveguil­la 64 St Marys 59

GNEEVEGUIL­LA opened up their Division 1 season at home to St Marys on Saturday night.

Gneeveguil­la raced out of the blocks in the first quarter with some very good transition offence to lead at the end of one by three points on a score line of 16-13. Marys upped their defense in the second quarter where John O’Leary with three three-pointers in a row kept the home team in the game. Marys led at the half by one.

Marys had the better of the third with strong offense by Shane and Darragh O’ Connell. The home team had the better of the fourth quarter with vital baskets by John O’Keeffe and very good team defence.

Marys tried to mount a comeback with Seamus Brosnan’s excellent play. However, Jack O’Connor sealed the win for Gneeveguil­la with an excellent basket from an offensive rebound.

UNDER 18 BOYS DIVISION 2 ST PAULS 85 Tralee Tigers 60

BOTH teams entered the game looking for their first win of the season and it was St Pauls that proved the victors.

St Pauls got out into an early lead in the first quarter thanks to baskets by William O’Brien and Sean O’ Neill bringing the Libraries side to an early lead at the end of the first quarter 17-8.

Tigers would prove stronger in the second quarter thanks to shooting by Ken Ocuo and James Friel, but good work under the boards by Brian Okwute would prove pivotal in this contest as he notched up 32 rebounds by the games end, with the quarter ending with 37-26 to St Pauls.

St Pauls upped the tempo of their game in the 3rd despite great scoring from Tigers finishing the quarter Pauls leading Tigers 6045. But St Pauls proved the victors with both teams putting on an exhibition in three point shooting finishing 85-60 in St Pauls favour.

UNDER 18 GIRLS DIVISION 1 St Pauls 41 Team Kerry 46

PAULS hosted Team Kerry in Spa GAA hall and a close contest saw the visitors finish the stronger to take the points.

The home side dominated on the boards, but Team Kerry lead at the end of the opening quarter 13-8 with Niamh O’Connor and Ellie McElligott on target with Pauls Ava Sheehan hitting a good three pointer to keep them in touch.

There was little between the sides throughout a low scoring game with a late Abbie Cronin basket for Pauls taking the game to overtime but the visitors regained the lead and finished strongly to take the points thanks to good performanc­es for Team Kerry by Olivia Twomey, Niamh O’Connor and Aibhlin Murphy making it back to back wins in the Under 18 league.

UNDER 14 BOYS DIVISION 2 Kenmare Kestrels 25 Killarney Cougars 42

THE Kestrels hosted the Cougars and entertaini­ng game turned in the second quarter with the visitors finding their range thanks great baskets by Rocco Sheehan and Maidchi Lynch to give Cougars the lead 23-13 by half-time.

Conor Adams impressed with nine points in the first half for the home side. Cougars thanks to Ted O’Gorman and Lucas Cronin maintained the lead with some great scores in the second half and despite good baskets by Sean Treyvaud who added six points it wasn’t enough the Kestrels against an impressive Cougars on the day.
