Kestrels U-11s see off KCYMS by single basket

U-11 BOYS KCYMS 15 Kenmare Kestrels 17

KCYMS were fastest out of the blocks at the Killorglin Sports Complex with a basket and free throw from Rian Hogan. They also added another score from Alex Garry but Kenmare replied with scores of their own from Donnacha O’Sullivan and David O’Brien which saw KCYMS lead 5-4.

The second quarter saw Liam O’Connell score two baskets for KCYMS, while Sean Griffin, Tommy Ferris and Ned O’Grady were all playing well. Kenmare single basket was scored by Liam Brolin with Danny and Ned O’Shea playing excellent defence. By half time KCYMS had increased their lead to 9-6

The third quarter saw Kenmare up the tempo and they went on the offensive outscoring Killorglin 9-6 with Chulann Hussey and Jack Wiggs getting the Kenmare scores and Callum Russell and Tadhg Óg Cronin were on the mark for KCYMS to tie the game at 15 apiece with just a quarter left.

The final quarter saw both teams give everything they had to win the game but the solitary score in this quarter came from Liam Brolin of Kenmare, and this proved the winning basket.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN St Josephs 71 Killarney Cougars 53

DUAGH was the venue for this Division 1 clash as St Josephs hosted Killarney Cougars and a strong opening quarter by the home side set them up for victory. St Josephs impressed to lead 21-8 after the opening quarter with Anna O’Connell leading the way with nine points as Cougars were very slow to settle.

The Killarney side had much the better of the second quarter with Emer O’Neill strong on the boards contributi­ng seven points as well strong defence to limit Maher’s dominance with Marion O’Callaghan three-point shooting reducing the arrears to 39-29 at half-time.

The game was put out of Cougars reach in the third quarter as the home side increased the lead to 58-38 with Loretta Maher again dominating on the boards adding 14 points.

Cougars came strong and again with a good final quarter but the home side always responded to maintain the lead and they comfortabl­y held on in the closing stages to secure a deserved victory. The win puts St Josephs unbeaten at the top of the League.
