FR GALVIN CUP SEMI FINAL Fossa 3-10 Firies 2-10

THIS Fr Galvin Cup clash at Farranfore on Saturday last had top class scores and strong defending.

Firies opened with a James O’Donoghue point. From the kick out, Paudie Clifford fired towards his forwards where brother David won possession and passed to Donald O’Sullivan for Fossa’s first goal. The Firies response was emphatic. William Courtney planted the ball in the corner of Myers net – 1-1 to 1-0 after 4 minutes.

Three Fossa points (Donald O’Sullivan, Paudie Clifford and Tadgh O’Shea) pushed Fossa ahead. Fossa’s Paudie Clifford was awarded a penalty able slotted home by Tadgh O’Shea. Fossa led 2-3 to 1-1 after 15 minutes.

Firies responded magnificen­tly, dominating the next 10 minutes. William Courtney and Padraig de Brún raised white flags. Jack Sherwood, Pat Browne and Padraig de Brún pointed– Firies 1-6 Fossa 2-3 after 25 minutes. Firies piled forward and engineered a second goal from Ed Kerrisk.

Firies led 2-6 to 2-3 after an intense effort. Fossa regrouped took a grip on the play for the rest of the half. Donald O’Sullivan pointed. David Clifford, despite being off balance from pressure by Dan O’Shea, got a rasping diagonal shot away from 15 metres which billowed the net 3-4 to 2-6 as half time beckoned.

David Clifford pointed. Paudie Clifford floated a 45m free was floated over the bar. Fossa led 3-6 to 2-6 at half time.

The scoring dropped in the second half. A Tadgh O’Shea free gave Fossa a four point gap 38th minute. Derry O’Sullivan won the kick out, soloed forward, did a one-two with Mikey O’Shea and pointed – 3-8 to 2-6.

Firies introduced subs. William Courtney notched up 3 points – 2 frees and 1 from play 3-8 to 2-9 with five minutes remaining. David Clifford kept the gap at a goal with a point – 3-9 to 2-9.

Pat Browne pointed for Firies. A Tadgh O’Shea pointed free had Fossa ahead 3-10 to 2-10. Jack Sherwood took possession on the burst. But Paudie Clifford launched himself against Sherwoods boot to smother his shot.
