Mother and daughter combo prove lethal for St Bridget’s win over Gneeveguilla

DIVISION 2 LADIES St. Bridget’ s 60 Gneeveguilla 35

ST Bridget’s hosted Gneeveguilla in this Division 2 Ladies league and also it was the first meeting of the two neighbouring clubs at senior ladies level.

St Bridget’s took control of the game from the very beginning, their man to man defence and press took Gneeveguilla by surprise and St Bridget’s took full advantage, outscoring their visitors 23 to 9 in the first quarter.

St Bridget’s kept up the intensity in the second quarter, with the mother daughter combination of Louise Nelligan McCarthy and Fiona Nelligan McGuire imperious for St Bridget’s and they dominated the first half, leading 39-13 at the half time interval.

St Bridget’s changed to a zone defence in the second half and Gneeveguilla began to find their rhythm, with some great inside play from Mary Cremin they began to get back into the game but St Bridget’s held their composure and secured the win.

U-12 BOYS St Bridget’s 16 St Paul’s 21

St Bridget’s led by two points after the first quarter and both teams scored equally in the second quarter so the home team held a lead of 11-9 at half time. St Paul’s scored better in both quarters of the second half, to win a close game by five. Owen O’Connor top scored with eight points for St Bridget’s and Cian O’Connor for St Paul’s with 12 points.

ACADEMY BOYS DIVISION1 St. Brendan’s 13 TK Bobcats 10

St Brendan’s U11 boys hosted TK Bobcats in Moyderwell Hall and it was Brendan’s first on the scoreboard with two lovely free shots from Brendan Meehan after drawing a foul from a fast break. Baskets from Darragh Morris, another free throw from Brendan and great defence from the home side saw the first quarter end with St Brendan’s 5-0 up.

The second quarter got off to a great start for Bobcat’s Stephen Turner landing a lovely basket from inside the key but St Brendan’s Liam Cooper and Jamie McCarty quickly answered with a basket each finishing the first half with St. Brendan’s stretching out to a 9-2 lead. Rohan Healy opened the scoring in the second half after drawing a foul and going to the line to make the free throw. Jack Jay for Bobcats showed lovely ball carrying skills during his time on the floor and got a lovely lay-up to keep the away side in the game.

With some big rebounds by Brendan’s Rohan Healy, a lovely basket by Jamie McCarty and a free throw from Brayden Pierce the home side led 13-4 finishing the third quarter. Bobcats came into the final quarter fighting for the win and with a lovely inside basket by Con Sheehan and two big baskets from Stephen Turner they were only three points behind Brendan’s with just seconds left on the clock.

The Bobcats defence proved too good for the home side to put up a score in the last quarter but in the last play of the game a massive rebound by Ryan Hand gave Brendan’s possession at the final buzzer with the game finishing 13-10 to St. Brendan’s.

U12 GIRLS Kenmare Kestrels 20 TK Cobras 27

A great game and very well played by both teams. The Cobra girls converted more scores by the final whistle but a great display of basketball for under 12 girls!

U14 GIRLS Kenmare Kestrels 28 Caherciveen 26

A super game by the U-14 Division 3 girls, it was basket for basket in the final quarter and it really could have gone any way but Kestrels just held on for victory.

U16 GIRLS Kenmare Kestrels 33 TK Cobras 44

TK Cobras were leading this game from the start, they were strong and fit and they were converting scores, Kenmare were playing well, winning good ball and creating a lot of shooting chances however today was not their day for scoring the Kenmare girls fell behind going into the half time break however they made a mighty comeback and it was a very close final few minutes to the game. TK Cobras shooting was better on the day.

U12 BOYS DIVISION 2 Kenmare Kestrels 20 Tralee Imperials 19 (after extra time)

The excitement was unbelievable as the two teams traded baskets for the whole game. These U-12 boys showed fantastic composure to keep their heads and focus with the excitement during this game in the gym. It was a very close game right the way through and ended at the full timer buzzer on 19 points all. Extra-time of 3 minutes was played and Kenmare very narrowly won by one point.
