A TRALEE man’s night out during Listowel Race Week to celebrate a reconciliation with his wife took a sour turn when he was arrested for engaging in threatening and abusive word or behaviour, a court has heard.

James McCarthy of 11 Muing Estate, Tralee pleaded guilty to the offence at Listowel District Court on Thursday, following his arrest at the Risin’ Sun Bar on Market Street on September 17 last.

The court was told that gardaí were called to a disturbance at the bar at around 12.30am, where they found the defendant roaring and shouting and being abusive to other people in the bar. He was asked to desist, Sergeant Kieran O’Connor told the court, but he refused and was arrested.

Solicitor Padraig O’Connell told the court that his 27-year-old client had been out in Listowel celebrating a recent reconciliation with his wife and was among friends, but admitted that there had been an ‘incident’ in the bar and he did become abusive.

He said he has since apologised for his actions and assured the court that his client has no more charges ‘in the pipeline,’ bar one case that simply needs to be finalised

“At 27 (years of age), he seems to be getting some bit of sense,” Mr O’Connell concluded.

He was convicted of the offence and fined €350, with 10 months to pay.
