Brains of Milltown-Listry sought to support Fleadh

PREPARATIONS for next summer’s County Fleadh Cheoil in Milltown are reportedly ramping up by the week, and one of the most fun fund-raisers billed for Milltown-Listry in advance of the momentous occasion will seek out the area’s sharpest quiz masterminds.

‘Brains of the Parish’ is a multi-quiz league that will get underway from December 1 with the first event scheduled for an 8pm start in Larkin’s Bar, Milltown. It will be the first in a series of six quizzes which will take place on the first Friday of each month between December and May, ahead of June’s Fleadh Cheoil.

“The Fleadh is a major festival costings tens of thousands to run and which requires significant funding and investment so we’re kicking off with these quizzes to get the momentum going but also to give people a few good nights out,” said Fleadh Cheoil chairman, Owen O’Shea.

“The local bars which will host the quizzes have all come on board to show their support, which is greatly appreciated, and we’re hoping to announce some big names for the Fleadh over the coming months so all support will help,” Owen added.

“We are asking local businesses, groups and organisations to sponsor a team for the quizzes and in that way to make their contribution to the festival. All such sponsorship will be acknowledged in the programme of events and publicity material. And if you can’t commit to the full six quizzes, then you’ll be welcome on any of the nights which will be advertised locally. It will be a quiz with a difference,” he said.

The quizzes will take place on the first Friday of every month at 8pm and are scheduled for O’Shea’s Bar; the Plough Bar; Langford’s Bar; Karl J’s Bar; and the Faha Court Bar at Killarney Country Club.

Teams of four can enter for €40 per night, but for those looking to sink their teeth into the experience of the entire series in the hunt for the special overall prize can avail of a discount. A team can enter all six quizzes for €200, meaning one night is free.
