The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Caherdaniel magazine on sale
WHY not buy literature of a local South Kerry flavour for Christmas this year with ‘The Caherdaniel Parish Magazine’, now in its eighth edition?
All 66 pages contain many locally informative photographs and articles of a wide variety.
The magazine also contains a very interesting photo of the arrival of the Sam Maguire Cup in Cahirsiveen in 1959. On that occasion, Valentia’s Mick O’Connell was the captain of the All-Ireland winning team over Galway, the first captain of a South Kerry team to do so.
The cup is pictured tied to the roof of the car, having journeyed from Killarney. It is quite difficult to name all those in the photo but the scribe of this page will venture to name some.
Front, Right to left: John Shanahan (Valentia, RIP),-John ’The Butcher’ O’Connor (Valentia and Cahirsiveen, RIP), Johnnie ‘Bawn’ Curran (Cahirsiveen, RIP), Mick O’Dwyer (Waterville), Dave Geaney (Castleisland), Johnnie Reidy (Valentia, RIP), Des Burke (Valentia), John ‘Dasher’ O’Connor (Valentia, RIP).
The names of the remaining two on the left of the front row escape me as do all at the back. Perhaps somebody out there can contribute and enlighten further.
Brian G. O’Sullivan from Kells is a sports historian and author of ‘Renard, It’s People and Places’ and also the book ‘St Michael’s Foilmore, 25 Years a Growing’.
He contributes an article entitled Derrynane’s Forgotten Triumph-South Kerry Champions 90 Years Ago.
An extract from his article is as follows: ‘Derrynane reached the 1925 South Kerry final which spilled into 1926 with Valentia claiming the crown after a replay.
The date of these games has puzzled many. The definite factor in the date is that Valentia received medals inscribed South Kerry champions 1925. A 1928 preview between the sides makes reference to Valentia defeating Derrynane after a replay in the last championship decider.’
