The Green face a nervous wait before learning fate

- BY JASON O’CONNOR

WHILE all Kerry Schools have played their Group games in the Corn Uí Mhuirí, those from the county that will be advancing to the quarter-finals are still to be fully known as Tralee CBS face a nervous wait on the fixture between St Fachtna’s Skibbereen and Hamilton High School Bandon next Wednesday before finding out if they have done enough to advance. The concession of five goals in a 5-6 to 2-13 defeat to Bandon last Wednesday in Millstreet prevented The Green from going through as Group winners after defeating Skibbereen in their first game.

They need either a Bandon win or a draw to be sure of going through with a Skibbereen win meaning the calculators will have to come out and determine the two sides to go through on points difference. In Group C St Brendans College and Pobalscoil Chorcha Dhuibhne were already assured of being in the quarter-final draw ahead of their meeting in Fitzgerald Stadium last Wednesday. It will be Pobalscoil who will go through as Group winners though as their 25 point win over Clonmel in the second round of fixtures trumped The Sem only beating the Tipperary side by three points on the opening day with matters ending level at 3-10 to 0-19. Ruaidhrí Ó Beaglaoich, Deividas Uosis and Dylan Ó Geanai scored the West Kerry school’s goals but it was Seamus Ó Conchúir’s point that levelled matters late on after Niall McCarthy scored 0-9 (6f) and Paul O’Shea scored four points for the Killarney school.

Intermediate School Killorglin were assured of a place in the knockout stages prior to last Wednesday with wins over Mercy Mounthawk and Rochestown but they missed out on the chance to through as Group winners on points difference as a 1-12 to 0-8 win over St Flannans saw the Clare school usurp them at the top. Mercy Mounthawk’s sole point from the campaign in a 1-14 to 3-8 draw with Rochestown caused the Cork School to miss out on making the knockout stages after Christmas.

In the all Cork Group B, Colaiste Choilm need to beat Clonakilty in the outstanding game this Friday to force points difference to decide who goes through between De La Salle Macroom, Colaiste Chriost Rí and themselves.

Below the Corn Uí Mhuirí, SP Sliabh Luachra Rathmore and Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine Kenmare have advanced to the B competition quarter-finals after Christmas, Rathmore will face St Colman’s of Fermoy while Kenmare will take on Kanturk.

In the C competition, Gaelcolaiste Ciarraí will play Presentation College Mardyke in the Quarter-Finals but today is more pertinent to the Tralee School as they face defending and five-in-a-row seeking champions St Brendans College in a novel O’Sullivan Cup Final.

Meanwhile, in the D competition Meanscoil Castlegregory have qualified for the Semi-Finals after a 1-13 to 2-7 win over Mary Immaculate Dunmanway on Monday in Lewis Road.

In the E competition, Killorglin Community College have also made the semi-final stage after a 3-9 to 2-4 win over Comeragh College last Friday in Mallow.
