Call for teams ahead of Stephen Lyne Soccer Tournament

-

FOLLOWING the huge success of last year’s inaugural Stephen Lyne Soccer Tournament, demand this year means the 5-a-side-tournamnet is moving from an indoor venue to an outdoor pitch which will provide a better atmosphere for all involved.

The call is for teams of 7 players and the entry fee, per team, is €100 where teams will be competing for The Stephan Lyne Perpetual Trophy which last year was presented to captain Paudie Looney.

“We decided to change the format this year as a lot of people expressed an interest in playing outdoors. All the funds raised go directly towards the Stephan Lyne Foundation,” said Denis Lyne.

Following the death of their son in 2009, Denis and Lotte launched the ‘Roots of Empathy’ program in a number of Killarney Schools by training instructors and 2018 is set be another busy year for the foundation as it looks to add more Roots of Empathy instructors that will benefit many more children.

“Stephen loved his soccer and played with Killarney Celtic at youth level and that’s where the whole idea for the tournament came from. It was actually a group of guys who play indoor soccer together that approached me with the idea of setting up a tournament in memory of Stephen. The founding members were Mike McSweeney, Joe Daly, and Mike Shea who is involved in helping us this year,” said Denis.

The tournament kicks off at Killarney Celtic Park on Wednesday, December 27 at 10am in what promises to be a great day’s action.
