- By TADHG EVANS

SHANAHAN’S Haven Pharmacy Castleisland has been recognised for its commitment to helping customers better understand their medication and treatment, receiving a prestigious status from the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) and healthcare company MSD.

NALA and MSD awards the Crystal Clear Health Literacy Mark to recognise pharmacies that are helping patients understand their health issues, boosting “health literacy”. NALA explained many adults have difficulty understanding medication leaflets, impacting their ability to effectively manage their health, but the people at Shanahan’s proved themselves ‘health literacy friendly’ when they impressed during an assessment.

In recognising Shanahan’s, Patient Partnership Manager MSD Ireland Nicola Fullam said “Haven Pharmacy Shanahan’s has demonstrated a continuous commitment to operating in a health literacy friendly way and this will have a long-term impact on the health of its customers.

“We are proud to award them with the Crystal Clear Mark to recognise their achievement and their dedication to the public’s needs through their use of language, training of staff, and more.”

A spokesperson for Shanahan’s said it was privileged to have been recognised as one of the leading pharmacies in the field of promoting health literacy, describing it as “a great and important achievement”, taking particular delight at the fact that Shanahan’s has become the tenth recipient of the award this year.
