Proud night for Kerry at Pride of Place annual awards
KERRY’S ENTRIES AT NATIONAL PRIDE OF PLACE EMERGED FROM KERRY COMMUNITY AWARDS PROCESS, INCLUDING COMMUNITY AWARDS’ WINNER KERRY SOCIAL FARM PROJECT
IT was a journey worth taking for two Kerry-based projects as they received recommendations at the Irish Pride of Place Awards held in Letterkenny, last weekend.
The hard work of Glenbeigh Community was rewarded with a runner-up position in category one, which is for villages with a population of less than 300 people. Also receiving a shortlisted honour was the Kerry Social Farming Project, winner of the Kerry Community Awards which took the runner-up spot in the ‘Community Reaching Out Initiative’ category.
“I congratulate Glenbeigh Community and the Kerry Social Farming Project on this achievement and wish them every success in the future. We are all deeply proud of what they have achieved,” said Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Sheahan, who attended the awards ceremony.
“This is a wonderful testament to the extraordinary voluntary work being done by both groups and shows the strength of our communities and community sector in Kerry,” he added.
The Pride of Place competition is run under the co-operation Ireland programme and acknowledges the invaluable work undertaken by communities and groups. Now in its sixteenth-year, the competition is the largest in the country to recognise community development and their achievements.
“This unique competition is about showing respect and inclusion for every sector in our communities, young, old, rich or poor and creating communities to which the people are proud to say they belong,” said Tom Dowling, Chairperson of Irish Pride of Place Competition.
