5K fund-raiser in the Park for microtrack project

- By TADHG EVANS

A FIVE-KILOMETRE fund-raising event will take place on Sunday, January 28, at Killarney National Park, Knockreer, in a bid to support the Killarney Community Microtrack Project.

Registration takes place from 10.30am, with an entry-fee of €5-per-person, or €20-per-family. The microtrack project is to include an Astro playing pitch, an athletics track, and a fully-lit outdoor basketball court.

“The Killarney Community Microtrack project group have been resilient in its pursuit of the development of the project in a location on new road in the middle of the schools, on land donated by St Brendan’s Trust,” Jerh Griffin explained.

“All sectors of the community are behind the project which has full planning permission and has already raised €100,000 over the last few years.” The members of the committee are very hopeful of achieving grant aid success, Jerh explained, adding that there’s potential for construction in early summer, 2018.

“With the joint event on January 28 involving the Killarney Microtrack Group and Killarney Valley AC, who have a wide membership through its programmes “Fit for Life” and “Fit for Youth”, a great event and a great cause is promised,” he said. “Let’s hope, in 2018, this group will be helped up off the canvas, and at this stage there will be no towel thrown in. Remember, this group has the proposal of a mult-imillion Euro project for a manageable grant, with great effort from all to get it to this point.”
