Number of cars destroyed by fire on Castleisland road

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

THREE cars were left completely destroyed after a fire broke out aboard a vehicle carrier along the main N23 Castleisland to Farranfore road early on Tuesday morning.

Roads were closed on the morning after the intense blaze, which was captured on video by local man Michael Moriarty (see inset photo), started near the Dysart Bridge area at around 10am and left the three cars completely gutted.

The cars, which were display models, were on the way to Divane’s Garage in Castleisland where they were to be displayed in an open day showcase on Wednesday.

Gardaí thankfully reported that there no injuries to any party and that they believe that the fire started accidentally and that there was no evidence of malice.

“I was driving along and suddenly I see this huge fire in front of. I was in the car with my wife and eight month old daughter and when the tyres of the car exploded due to the heat, there was a loud bang,” said local man Michael Moriarty, speaking to The Kerryman on Tuesday.

My poor wife thought that something was going to explode into the car and hurt us. Thankfully though, the emergency services were quick onto the scene to sort everything out,” he finished.

“As long as nobody was hurt, and that there are no customers left without cars, it’s all finished on a positive note,” said John Vaughey of Divane’s.
