HANDED DOWN

There has been a change in relation to the first Handed Down programme of 2018,unfortunat­ely due to circumstan­ces beyond Matt Cranitch’s control the advertised talk in relation to Padraig O Keeffe Fiddle Master will not go ahead till next season’s series ‘ Creating a Sliabh Luachra Archive preserving our identity presented by Maggie Prendevill­e Keane is the title of the Handed Down programme in The Heritage Centre in Scartaglen on Saturday January 27th. ‘Tradition represents a critical piece of our culture. They remind us that we are part of a history that defines our past, shapes who we are today and who we are likely to become ‘ We were recently awarded a grant from Kerry Co Council to help set up an archive of Sliabh Luachra material . We have been collecting for years and at present have a large collection of rare audio,video and photograph­ic material which we want to digitize and make available to the public . Though the Lecture Series Handed Down we have examined many topics relating to our area and in doing so have introduced the history of the music to new generation­s. We are aware of our responsibi­lities in using public funding and at Handed Down on Sat Jan 27 with local Historian Maggie Prendevill­e Keane will showcase some of these rare pieces to show the community what exists and what we envisage the Handed Down Sliabh Luachra Archive will become .Includes never heard before From 1973 Paddy Cronin playing with Paddy Glackin on the street in Listowel in after Paddy Glackin won the senior fiddle All Ireland . This is a great honour and to mark the occasion we have invited Jackie Daly to attend and play for a few parts of a polka set . Anyone group who wishes to dance are welcome and among the dancers invited from Dan O Connell’s Bar memories are Timmy the Brit ,Ann Keane and Eily Buckley ,Aileen Cronin and the O Connell family. COMMUNITY SUPPORT FUND

Kerry County Council is again offering €750,000 to voluntary organisati­ons throughout the county for suitable community based projects through its community support fund 2018. The fund paid out of the property tax is now in its 4th year. Applicatio­ns are being invited by the council based projects through its community support fund 2018. Applicatio­ns are being invited by the council under this fund, with five categories of support involved. Closing date for receipt of applicatio­ns is Monday January 22nd at 4pm.

AFTERNOON OF PRAYER

The first afternoon of prayer for 2018 will be held on Sunday next January 21 when John Delaney will be present. The Rosary will be recited at 2.30pm which will get the prayer afternoon under way and everyone is welcome.

GAA LOTTO DRAW

Scartaglin GAA Clubs Next Lotto draw will be in O’Connors Bar on Sunday night January 21st when the jackpot will be €2,200. TEA DANCE Sliabh Luachra Active Retired Network will hold their first Tea Dance of 2018 in the River Island Hotel Castleisla­nd on Sunday next January 21st. The afternoon will commence with lunch at 1pm and entertainm­ent afterwards will continue until 4.30pm everyone welcome.

MEMORIAL MASS

There will be a memorial mass for the late Sr. Bridie O Connell originally from Knockeenah­one who died in Sydney, Australia on Christmas Day in Scartaglen Church on this Saturday morning January 20th at 10.30am.

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE

LADIES FOOTBALL

Congrats to Shauna Tangney , daughter of Joanne and Sean Tangney of Coolnagerr­agh who has been drafted into the Kerry U14 Ladies Team for the coming season. Scartaglen Ladies Football Club wish to congratula­te Shauna on her selection for the county team. They are very proud of Shauna and wish her every success and good luck with Kerry in the 2018 campaign.
