Lixnaw enjoys one last Christmas do with Turkey Trot
COUCH TO 5K GANG OUT IN FORCE FOR POSTPONED ‘TURKEY TROT’ FINALE
LIXNAW enjoyed one last, brilliant Christmas event last week in its rescheduled ‘Turkey Trot’ – the culmination of the village’s couch to 5k programme that’s been getting everyone fit and bringing them all together in recent months.
The couch to 5k began when a few people in the community were chatting about how isolated rural life can feel sometimes.
A couch to 5K seemed a logical thing to do in something everyone could take part in and which wasn’t going to cost a lot of money.
“All you needed was a high visibility jacket and a smile!” organiser Majella Forde said.
Training took place three nights a week with Jason Teahan - often in tough conditions. “We did get hammered for a few of the sessions because of the storms and the horrendous weather we had a few nights,” Majella explained.
Over 80 people registered for the finale Turkey Trot. Everyone on the day received a Turkey Trot fridge magnet as a reminder of the accomplishment.
The event - which had to be postponed at Christmas - was such a success that it will take place again towards the end of the year. The will start in October and will finish in early December as a family fun day in Lixnaw Village.
The event was a huge success and the money raised will go to three different charities. The charities chosen were Cycle against Suicide, Tralee Soup Kitchen and the Tina McElligott treatment fund.
But that’s not all for the parish. A walking group will now continue into 2018, meeting up every Wednesday at 8pm and continuing until Easter at least with a big family fun day planned for Easter Sunday.
