The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Winners from all over at Kerry ETB awards night
Coláiste na Sceilge and Trinity College Dublin’s Dervla Donegan is Kerry Education and Training Board’s (Kerry ETB) 2017 Overall Academic Student Gold Medal Award recipient for 2017, making her the big winner at last Friday’s ETB Student Award Ceremony at IT Tralee.
Dervla, a medicine student at the renowned Dublin college, bagged no less than six H1s in her Leaving Cert while reaching the 98th percentile in her HPAT exam, a result that helped the former Scifest prize-winner secure a scholarship.
But Dervla was far from the sole winner on the night; in total, 65 awards were presented to students from schools under the Kerry ETB umbrella.
Sarah Jane Ní Shé (Coláiste na Sceilge), and Sinéad Ní Dhomhnaill were named as best students in terms of languages, arts, and social sciences, while Gráinne Donegan (Coláiste na Sceilge) and Padraig O’Connell (Castleisland Communiy College) both took the equivalent prize for science. Meanwhile, Ciarán Clifford (Coláiste na Sceilge) won the title of “Best Technology Student”.
Other major prizewinners included Abbie Ní Dhálaigh (Coláiste na Sceilge) and Roisin Wall (Killarney Community College, winners of the prize for “Béaltrialacha Roghnacha sa Ghaeilge an Teastais Shóisearaigh”, a category honouring the late Kathleen Lucey, a Tralee Community College teacher and superb supporter of the Irish language. The “Best Business Studies Student Award” was presented in honour of Causeway Comprehensive teacher Leonard O’Donnell, who sadly passed away in 2017, and it was Rachel Burke, also of Causeway Comprehensive, who fittingly took the honour.
“The award recipients are excellent role models for their schools and centres,” Kerry ETB Chief Executive Officer Colm McEvoy said. “I wish to thank Ann O’Dwyer [Director of Schools, Music and Youth]; Deputy Principals; Centre Managers; the teachers; and all staff in our schools and centres for their hard work and dedication, which is the cornerstone of the students’ success...I [also] wish to thank the members of the board of Kerry ETB; the boards of management; and the parents councils for their support ... we very much appreciate and value this support”.
