COMMUNITY GAMES

The 2018 Community Games season may not be long under way but already the young people of Kilcummin are making their mark. Last weekend the Sports Complex in Tralee was the venue for the county swimming finals and here young Daniel O’Sullivan put in impressive performances to win his heat and gain fourth place and a pewter medal in the undereight freestyle event. Well done to Grace O’Sullivan and Diarmuid Moynihan (under-10 freestyle) and Tara Roarty (under-12 backstroke) who swam very well but were outside the medals in events which always attract large numbers of competitors with a very high standard. The community centre in Keel was the venue then on this Saturday for the under-12 and under-16 County Music finals and what a successful weekend it proved to be for Kilcummin Community Games. First up it was solo music under-12 and here Michael Healy on accordion retained his county title, a feat which is never easily achieved. However, Michael wowed the judges with yet another perfect performance and he was a most worthy gold medal winner and he now goes forward to represent Kilcummin and Kerry in the allIreland finals later in the year. This success was quickly followed by another wonderful Kilcummin display as our very young under-16 Music Group also swept to county glory. This very talented young group of musicians under the guidance of Grania Evans won the hearts of the audience and judges alike and they too will head to Dublin for the all-Ireland finals. Heartiest congratulations to Ailbhe Brosnan on tin-whistle, Olwyn Evans on concertina, Ewan Evans on banjo, bodhran and mandolin, Julianna Friel on guitar, Kirill Healy on tin-whistle and Clare Stagg on accordion. Well done also to Sarah Pigott, who put in a great display to come in fourth in the under-16 recitation; to Ewan Evans, who took fourth place in the solo music under-16 and to Lea O’Connell, who performed wonderfully in the under-12 solo singing but was outside the medals in a highly competitive event. So overall a fantastic weekend for our young performers who received just reward for the many hours of practice put in over recent weeks.
