The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Local workshops based on community solution s to climate change
TRANSITION Kerry are looking forward to beginning a series of six one-off community climate action workshops around the county, starting with an evening in Miltown on the 21st February from 6.30-9.30pm at the Nagle Rice Community Centre. These will be a follow-on from the climate conference that was hosted on the 11th November, 2017.
The workshop will look at issues relating to climate change and how you can climate-proof your community. It will also focus on our patterns of consumption and how this impacts on climate and community resilience. There will be practical discussions on how local communities can find solutions in their own homes, schools, places of work and community spaces relating to the impacts and challenges posed by a changing climate.
The issue of a changing climate is very prominent at the moment and communities are realising that it is having a wide impact, within our communities to our local economies. We need to find creative and locally based solutions as to how we create and use our energy, how we travel around, how we produce our food and how to reduce the amount of food that is wasted.
A changing climate also has huge effects on our local biodiversity, and a solution can be something as simple as planting native woodlands and hedges to absorb excess water and protect from flooding. It also includes issues relating to excess and unnecessary packaging of products and how much water and other precious resources are used in all of these processes.
This workshop will also be run in the following communities and we will post dates, times and venues as they are confirmed: Tralee, Castleisland, Cahirciveen, Ballyheigue/Listowel, Fenit.
If you are interested in attending a workshop in your local area, or if you want to find out more or register a place, please contact Niamh @ 086 7247066.
