Over a decade since CBS tasted Munster title glory

-

Tralee CBS 0-13 St Brendan’s Killarney 2-6

ALTHOUGH they sit joint-second on the Corn Uí Mhuirí roll of honour with 15 titles, it’s 11 years since Tralee CBS were last champions of Munster.

Under the management of teachers and former Kerry senior team selectors, John O’Keffee and Eamon Walsh, Tralee CBS faced St Brendan’s College, Killarney in a Bank Holiday Monday final in Austin Stack Park against a Sem team that contained future Kerry senior players Brian Kelly, Padraig O’Connor, Jonathon Lyne and James O’Donoghue.

Tralee CBS weren’t without their future Kerry seniors either but remarkably Barry John Keane was only introduced as second sub, although he certainly left his mark with three points from play.

Tralee CBS led 0-8 to 1-2 at half time, with O’Donoghue scoring The Sem goal. Tralee took a commanding 0-13 to 1-2 lead after 42 minutes, but amazingly they didn’t score again as The Sem rallied. A late David Brosnan goal left a point between them but they couldn’t find the equaliser and Tralee CBS had their 15th Munster title and first since 2000.

TRALEE CBS: Kevin O’Shea, Danny O’Sullivan, Liam Kissane, Gary Rolls, Denis McElligott, Bryan Costello, Sean Higgins, Stephen Browne, Barry Shanahan (0-1), Ross O’Callaghan, Brendan Dillon (0-5), Paudie Hurley, Alan O’Donoghue 0-2 (1f), Paul Culloty (0-1), Barry John Walsh (0-1). Subs: Shane O’Carroll for P Hurley, Barry John Keane (0-3) for R O’Callaghan, D O’Neill for L Kissane, Joe Scully for Danny O’Sullivan
