WINNER last year, 18-year-old Grace Eileen McElligott, a student of Tarbert Comprehensive, could not have been more glowing about the competition and she encouraged more people to follow her lead and take part.

“My photograph was of Ballybunion. Last year we had French exchange students over and we decided to take them down to the beach, and the picture is of them facing the ocean – it was kinda cool!” she said.

“My friend was beside me, it was cold and windy, I saw this scene and I thought ‘that would make a lovely photo’ – so out with the camera, and I captured it,” she said.

“I remember asking for a camera one Christmas. My sister is an artist, and I come from a family with a big interest in art and pictures and that – so I suppose that’s where it came from!”

Deciding at a later stage to submit the photograph for competition after her year-head, Ms Hogan, brought the contest to her attention, Grace was interested from the get-go.

Despite having little expectations, she said she was astounded when she received an e-mail telling her she’d only gone and won the whole thing. Since then, she hasn’t loosened her grip on photography.

“It’s continuing as a pastime, because it’s important to keep following your interests,” she said. “I’d absolutely recommend the competition. I think it give you a boost of confidence in yourself; when you get something out of it, it’s nice to be rewarded,” said Grace Ellen.
