Business briefing brings the crowd

-

A TURNOUT of 50 people braved the elements on Thursday morning to attend the Kelliher O’Shea Chartered Accountants briefing in the River Island Hotel in Castleisland.

Business people and company representatives from all over Kerry attended the briefing on the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that will be effective from May 25, 2018.

Karen Hickey and Marlis Kerins of Peninsula Ireland gave a concise presentation on the key areas of focus.

The new regulations will replace the existing data protection framework under the EU Data Protection Directive. Persons or organisations involved in data processing of any sort including information on employees and customers need to be aware the regulation addresses them directly in terms of the obligations it imposes.

The GDPR emphasises transparency, security and accountability by data controllers and processors, while at the same time standardising and strengthening the right of European citizens to data privacy.

One of the key messages made was that people should not fear the new regulations but to be aware of some of the changes that will occur and review their current data protection and privacy policies now in order that they can be compliant by May 25.
