Much sadness as Lady O’Connell laid to rest

-

THERE has been sadness in the Killarney area this week at the passing of Elizabeth, Lady O’Connell, of Lakeview House, House, whose Requiem Mass took place yesterday (March 6) at the Church of Christ, Prince of Peace, Fossa, a Church she had fund-raised tirelessly for during her life.

Born in 1923, Lady O’Connell passed away peacefully at her home last Thursday. She was a member of the MacCarthy-O’Leary family of Millstreet, Cork, and in 1953 she married the late Sir Morgan O’Connell, 6th Baronet O’Connell, of Lakeview, Killarney, and Ballybeggan.

A Trustee of Muckross House, in her younger years she provided nursing care as a civilian to military personnel in the Second World War.

“I concelebrated the Mass with Fr Liam McCarthy,” Fr Tom Looney explained to The Kerryman following Tuesday’s Requiem Mass.

“She was born in Kent but became well-known locally for her involvement with rowing in Fossa and for her extensive charity work and fund-raising, including with her husband for the Prince of Peace Church in Fossa.

“She was also an Area Commission for Kerry Girl Guides,” Fr Looney added.

Lady O’Connell is survived by her children, Frances, Sue, Maurice, John, Katie and Claire; her grandchildren; and extended family.

She was laid to rest yesterday at the family plot on the grounds of St Lelia’s Church.
