Busmen favour one-way traffic on Slea Head
MOST coach operators favour introducing a one-way system around Slea Head to alleviate summertime traffic congestion, according to a survey carried out by Comharchumann Dhún Chaoin.
Although limited in its scope, the online survey found that 90 per cent of coach operators and businesses supported the introduction of a 10am to 4pm one-way system during the summer. The one-way system is being advocated by the Comharchumann as part of its effort to press Kerry County Council to tackle the chaotic traffic congestion that plagues Dún Chaoin during the summer months, particularly at Slea Head and Casadh na Gráige (Clogher Head).
The survey also received unanimous support for the provision of a carpark on the sea side of the road at Casadh na Gráige, where traffic is frequently held up by cars that are parked awkwardly by tourists who stop to photograph the spectacular view.
Although the Comharchumann understands that Kerry County Council is working on a plan to address Dún Chaoin’s summertime traffic problems, they fear this could drag on for years and they want a temporary solution, which would include a one-way traffic system, put into operation immediately.
“There is a danger, if a solution is not put in place, that visitors and others will be very dissatisfied, that the area will get a bad reputation and that local businesses will suffer,” a spokesperson for the Comharchumann said.
