Mary’s life was with her family and her home

- Mary McElligott, Lixnaw

MARY McElligott (nee Power) Tower View Farm, Ballinageragh, Lixnaw passed away peacefully at her residence on Wednesday 1st November 2017 aged 86 surrounded by her family.

Mary was born in Ballinageragh on the 18th February 1931 to Richard and Hannah Power (nee Brosnan, Fortwilliam, Abbeydorney)

Mary spent all her life in Ballinageragh where she had a challenging start losing her own mother when she was only five years old, and her father when she was twenty nine, but she was fortunate to have great relatives and neighbours that looked out for her and she never wanted for anything. She attended Lixnaw School which was run by the Presentation Sisters and they helped her in anyway they could during her time there. She was a quite unassuming woman, never quick to judge. She never looked for the lime light and never needed it. Family was everything to her and she liked nothing better than having her grandchildren visit and spend time with her. She always liked meeting people. In her early years she would be seen cycling to and from the village where she would do her shopping and in later years having people calling to her home where there was always a warm welcome and cup of tea and something to eat. Music and dancing were some of her favourite passtimes and she also had a great interest in sport, especially hurling and football and attended many matches when her grandsons started playing with Lixnaw and Kerins Rahillys.

She loved farm life, and worked hard during her life for the farm. Spring time was one of her favourite times as this was when the new born calves arrived as she took charge of looking after them and took great pride in it. She was a devoted home maker cooking, sewing, and knitting were all part of her daily routine. Fresh loaves of bread baked every day and cakes baked for special occasions and for Christmas.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Jud. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Catherine and Hannah and her sons Richard and Michael and their families, relations and friends.

Mary was laid to rest in Dysert graveyard. May Mary’s gentle soul rest in peace.
