The agonies of Arsene and Arsenal

-

WHAT else was he going to say? What else could he say when asked other than that he remains convinced he’s the right man for the job? And yet we couldn’t but react the way we did... seriously, Arsene? Seriously?

How can you look at the facts at hand and come to that conclusion? Before the game you admitted this year was worse even than last and then, after a third humiliating defeat in seven days, you say you remain convinced you’re the right man for the job? Seriously?

We say this acknowledging that there was no good answer to the question. The trouble is he said it with the kind of conviction that suggests he wants to carry on and see out the second year of his two year contract.

Giving him the contract in the first place was madness, the time had come and gone for Wenger to go and, yet, here he still is day by day leaching credibility and damaging his reputation and legacy (even as his place in history is assured).

A manager of his stature should leave the stage basking in applause, with cries for him to carry on ringing in his ears, how sad instead that it’s the sound of boos that people will most associate with his final years on the Arsenal touchline.
