Boxers heading to National finals
THE Cashen Vale Boxing Club has two boxers going forward to the National Boy 4 and Junior 1-2 championships in Dublin next weekend after their wins in the finals of the Munster championships in Dungarvan last Sunday.
Ryan Downey won his fifth consecutive Munster title by defeating Dane Finn (St Nicholas BC) in the Junior 2 50kg category. The Ballybunion youth started well and boxed at a high tempo for all three rounds, controlling the first and second with good jabs, and wrapping up the title in the third round on a score of 5-0.
Aaron McElligott stopped Cathal Cox from Southside BC in the first round of their 70kg Boy 4 bout. The Kilflynn fighter was a class apart as he easily won his third Munster title.
Downey and McElligott are holders of National Schoolboy titles and have had wins in international competitions.
Dylan Falvey lost to three-time national champion L Gureshidze (Togher BC). Falvey won his semi-final on a score of 5-0 but on this occasion the Lixnaw boy had to settle for a silver medal.
