Sixth bus coming on stream for Kerry Parents and Friends group

- By TADHG EVANS

WITH some 350 people in attendance on Saint Patrick’s night, the 2018 Barn Dance at Kate Kearney’s Cottage in aid of the Kerry Parents and Friends Association (KPFA) Buy a Bus Campaign was another stunning success – and further good news has come the campaign’s way in recent days.

Agnes Casey Rooney has confirmed that the campaign has secured its sixth bus – a second-hand vehicle worth €16,000 – and has set its sight on securing at least three more buses before the year is out.

The campaign began in recent years after Agnes identified a need to replenish the association’s ageing bus fleet. Over the years, KPFA has provided unrivalled assistance to Agnes’ sister, Mairead, and the ensuing campaign was an attempt to return the favour.

In recent days Buy a Bus has benefited not only from some €7,000 raised through the barn dance, but also a donation of €2,250 from Kenmare Macra na Feirme and the support of Killarney Municipal District Cathaoirleach Niall Kelleher’s charity shindig.

“We were very lucky to have Kenmare Mart Chairperson Councillor Dan McCarthy there on the night for our auction, which raised €1,500,” Agnes said.

“The barn dance was a huge success, with around 350 people of all ages from zero to 80. We’re very hopeful that we’ll get the funds we need for at least another three buses before the year is out, and we’re helped out by the fact that we’re one of the main charities chosen for the 2018 Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.”
