RAHEEN PUPILS SHOW GENEROUS STREAK

LOCAL SCHOOL HOSTS MARKET DAY AND BIDDY EVENT AS PART OF CHARITY DRIVEN PROJECT

- By SINEAD KELLEHER

CHARITY begins at home or in this case at school as students from Raheen National School came together on Friday last to raise funds for their chosen charity.

The students organised their very own market day to help raise funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital and they invited parents and members of the local community to come along and visit the school for the event. The event is overseen by the confirmation students at Raheen National School who every year do something for charity as part of their confirmation celebration.

Following their confirmation last week they set about putting together a market day at the school and were assisted by the rest of the pupils at the 34 pupil school.

A host of stalls were set up at the school and parents, teachers, pupils and members of the local community came along to buy baked goods, toys, books and even timber and turf.

The pupils even drew up a marketing plan for the event including handing out flyers and Facebook advertising to help promote the market day.

In total they raised €1,500 on day – part of which will go to their chosen charity Temple Street Children’s Hospital and the remainder to their own school.

As a small school in rural area funds like this are vital to help purchase equipment for the school.

“It is huge money and credit is due to the children and to the community who helped out,” says teacher, Ann Kelliher

“A special thanks is due to the parents association and their chairman, Eugene Bowler, who were very supportive of the event.”

Cllr John Joe Culloty even came along to support the event and had his fortune read at one of the stalls.

The success of the market day comes following the school’s previous fundraiser on St Brigid’s day when they went on the Biddy to raise funds for their charity and the school. This raised €1,000.

This week also sees the school add even more funds to their collection as they host a charity week with a range of fun events planned, including a movie day, a games day and a non uniform day.
