SOUTH KERRY LEAGUE FINAL Dromid Pearses 1-13 Templenoe 1-8

PLAYED in chilly but sunny conditions in Sneem on St Patrick’s Day, Dromid Pearses edged out Templenoe after a very entertaining match played in a very competitive but sporting manner all through.

Both teams had last minute changes with Cian Hallisey not lining out for Templenoe and likewise Caoilan Farrelly for Dromid Pearses.

The game began with Niall O’Shea pointing a free for Dromid Pearses, but in the third minute Templenoe’s reply was a lovely goal from Stephen O’Sullivan after Pat Spillane and Seán Moriarty putting in the spade work the latter very smartly punching the ball out to O’Sullivan who is lethal in those positions.

Templenoe could have had a second only for a super save by Pearses’ goalie Donal Ger O’Sullivan from Pat Spillane. Stephen O’Sullivan added a pointed free to the Templenoe account.

Shane O’Connor led the charge up the wing for Dromid Pearses and he hit a low shot across the goalmouth where his brother outstanding midfielder and my Man of the Match Niall O’Connor latched on and finished it to the net. The game was now tied at 1-1 apiece after a hectic first 10 minutes.

The next two points were Dromid Pearses Chris Farrelly a free and Dylan O Donoghue from play after a smashing crossfield foot pass from Niall O’Shea. Brian Crowley and O’Donoghue exchanged points to leave it 1-4 to 1-2 after 20 minutes in favour of Dromid Pearses.

Templenoe hit two great points from play first from wing-back John Rice and Pat Spillane tied the game at 1-4 each. Two frees from Dromid and one for Templenoe along with the best score of the Match from Templenoe centre-back Danny Cahillane left the game all square at half-time at 1-6 each.

The second half started with Dromid Pearses getting a firm grip of proceedings all over the field and pressed on to get a lead they were never to relinquish. Two frees from Chris Farrelly and Thomas Curran were replied to by Brian Crowley who tried hard throughout for Templenoe.

Between the 44th and 58th minute Dromid rattled off four unanswered points Dylan O’Donoghue and Gearoid J O’Sullivan from play and Farrelly with two frees to lead 1 12 to 1-7.

Pat Spillane and Gearoid J O’Sullivan closed the scoring with a classy point each to leave Dromid Pearses 2018 Cahirsiveen Credit Union sponsored South Kerry League Champions on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-8.

Both clubs must be complimented for taking to the field without a number of regulars hence enabling the South Kerry Board the opportunity to conclude the competition on schedule.

Sneem GAA had their facilities in tip top shape considering all the rain that fell the previous week. Ger Murphy refereed the game excellently. At stages due to a dead sod things got a bit fiery but he stuck to his guns and kept control and applied the rules accordingly.
