Listowel on song for St Patrick’s Day

- By EVE DOWLING

IT was all laughter and smiles in Listowel on Saturday as the people of the town and villages around it came together to watch their ever-growing St Patrick’s Day Parade. Listowel had another successful parade this year as the town even made it on national television.

The town’s St Patrick’s Day Parade was led by the man himself, St Patrick, at exactly 1pm. The parade was sounded by the convent primary school marching band. The band sounded a variety of beating drums and traditional tin whistles. The clubs in Listowel sported their team colours as the crowd saw every team from Listowel Emmets to Listowel Rugby Club and Listowel Celtics.

A variety of vintage cars followed the teams which was then followed by Listowel Tidy Towns and the fire trucks. Watchers had nothing but great things to say. David Twomey from Listowel said “The parade is fantastic. It gets better every year. We love bringing our son Dylan down every year”. Diana Doyle from Killocrim, but born, in Boston said “It’s amazing to see the parade and be in Ireland for the day. As an American you never get to truly experience the day until you’re here.” Diana’s triplets Yanina, Ashley and Delia said, “The parade was a brilliant and we were sad to see it finish.”

TG4 were there to capture the day as they celebrated the ending of The National Rith, and Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh graced the stage in the square and spoke of Listowel’s prosperity in the Irish language. Overall, it was a lovely day in Listowel despite the cold weather
