Ardfert scoops film award

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

IT’S been said before and it’ll be said again in the future – there’s never a dull moment when it comes to Ardfert NS.

Whether they are organising cycles or selling bulls or winning numerous awards, Principal Betty Stack and her merry band of teachers and students always have something up their sleeves.

This past week was again no different so as the pupils of fifth class garnered another award for their filmmaking skills on Wednesday, March 21 at the ‘Fresh Film Festival’ in Limerick.

Submitting both ‘The Gooseberry Fair’, a film based on a true story from Ardfert’s historic fair and ‘Fada Amach’, an Irish language film retelling the story of the Voyager space probes, the class was highly commended for its “production design” on the former, in particular.

“Filmmaking is a wonderful way of teaching curriculum subjects,” said Betty.

‘Literacy, music, history, drama, science and the technical aspects of the film-making process itself to name but a few. And also it’s an opportunity for the children to use and develop their creative abilities, inspiring them perhaps to follow a creative path in the future, a pillar of the Creative Ireland programme,” she finished.

It was a team effort with teachers Mrs Holland and Mr O’Connor, Ms Martin and SNA Eilin Drumgoole giving up their time to help with prop and costume-making, helping the children with their acting performances and camera skills.
