Scart, Stacks B and Moyvane set early pace

-

GROUP A

SCARTAGLIN and Austin Stacks B made it two wins from two at the weekend with the East Kerry side victorious like Stacks were over Kilgarvan on the first day. They had the Kenmare District outfit effectively beaten by half-time on their home patch leading by 4-6 to 0-2 with last year’s Kerry Minor Eddie Horan scoring 2-3 of that total and both Pa Rahilly and Brian Hanrahan scoring their other goals. The hosts made a better fist of it in the second period as Sean Godfrey scored two goals and Keith Harrington added a third but Scart went on to win out by 6-10 to 3-6 as a Shay Walsh brace were their other two goals in a 13 point victory.

Stacks had a much tighter win over Knocknagoshel as some missed chances in the first period came against the North Kerry side in their opponents winning by 2-7 to 1-9. Niall Barrett had give Knock a slender 0-4 to 0-3 lead at the break before in a more exiting second half Cian Liston scored the visitors first goal to put them ahead for the first time. The hosts responded with a good move that led to a goal for Barrett but a brace from Alan Duggan and a second goal for Liston had Stacks back in the lead. John Walsh brought Knock back within a point but crucially they could not get an equaliser in losing their second game in-a-row.

Valentia made up for their loss to Churchill on the opening day meanwhile in overcoming Asdee by a single score themselves as they just about held off a late charge from the visitors. A John Shanahan goal topped off a great start for the Young Islanders in leading by 1-3 to 0-0 early on before Noel Long and Paul Carroll brought Asdee back into it at halftime in trailing by 1-5 to 0-4.

Three successive points after the break further reduced the margin to a point and Valentia had to survive a great goal chance for the visitors before Shanahan found Jim Lynch to palm into the net for a lead of 2-7 to 0-7. Owen Tydings brought Asdee right back into it when he found the net as David Hussey had to clear the lines again for the hosts in a hot and heavy finish where they just about won by 2-7 to 1-8.

Kerins O’Rahillys B and Churchill was postponed due to a bereavement.

GROUP B

A WINNING start for Sneem/Derrynane and Moyvane winning their second game were the main highlights in this section as the South Kerry side had a strong 3-17 to 0-14 win over Dingle B out in West Kerry. In effect they had the game won by half-time in leading by 3-9 to 0-3 with Shane and Paidí McGuillicuddy along with a Rory Galvin effort giving them a 15 point advantage at the break. Dan Ryan, David O’Connor and Seamus O’Flaherty put over scores in a much improved second-half display by the hosts but they still lost out by 12 points in the end.

Moyvane put five goals past Rathmore B themselves in a 17 -point success with Martin Stack getting two of them inside the opening three minutes as despite Mark T Reen putting Rathmore on the scoreboard they trailed by 3-5 to 0-3 at half-time after Gavin Kennelly scored the North Kerry side’s third. Kevin Kennelly and Diarmuid Leahy scored Moyvane’s second half goals as despite the East Kerry side having some chances themselves they lost out by 5-10 to 0-8 at the final whistle.

Ballyduff had 13 points to spare in defeating Tuosist on home turf with a first half goal from Padraig Boyle and some points from brother Mikey helping them to a lead a of 1-6 to 0-3 at the break. Padraig Boyle scored a second goal in the second period as Jack Goulding registered 1-4 as Tuosist scored consolation goals from Gordon and Colm Brosnan in a 3-16 to 2-6 defeat away from home.

Duagh had the bye for this round and will return to action themselves away to Tuosist next month.
