CAHERDANIEL

Co League: Dingle 0: 14 Sneem/ Derrynane 3: 17. A great result by Sneem/Derrynane after making the long journey to Dingle. With only a panel of 13 players making the trip, it didn’t stop them playing a great attacking game of football. A goal by David David McGillicuddy straight from the throw in gave them the perfect start. It was soon followed by two goals, one each by brothers Ian and Rory Galvin and this set them up for a nice lead at the break 3-9 to 0-3. There was a great spread of scores in the second half with seven different players getting on the scoreboard.

Thanks to the great support for cheering on the lads all day. They are at home next week to Castlegregory in the County Junior Championship.

COUNTY LEAGUE DIVISION 4: Cromane 1-11, Gneeveguilla 1-17

Our seniors played their first game of the year in Cromane on Sunday when they welcomed Gneeveguilla in Division 4 of the county league. It proved to a tough outing as we ended up on the end of a six-point reverse, however there were still plenty of positive in defeat.

Next week is junior championship time with our first group two game away to Kilgarvan on Easter Sunday (April 1) at 2.30 p.m.

Team: Paudie McCarthy; Shane Ahern, Seán Teahan, Liam Teahan; Conor Sugrue, John Michael Foley, Ethan Griffin; Donnchadh Walsh, Finbar Casey; Darren Houlihan, Paul Patrick O’Sullivan 1-4 (0-2f), Micheál Shaughnessy; Seán O’Sullivan 0-6 (0-4 frees), Mikey Houlihan 0-1, Emmet Casey. Subs: Stephen Foley for S Ahern two minutes, Cathal Crosby for E Casey 40m, S Ahern for S Foley 40m, E O’Connor for F Casey 50m, Brice Dourieu for PP O’Sullivan 55m. MID KERRY LEAGUE

We played our third game in this year’s Mid Kerry League when we took on Beaufort at John Mitchels GAA pitch last Wednesday evening.

We gave our minor contingent the night off which game an opportunity to a number of other players. The result was poor as we lost by a significant margin. A wake-up call ahead of the county league game that followed four days later. Final score: Beaufort 4-23, Cromane 1-6.

Team: Paudie McCarthy; Dan Ahern, Seán Teahan, Brice Dourieu; Shane Ahern, John Michael Foley; Liam Teahan; Finbar Casey, Darren Houlihan; Emmet Casey, Micheál Shaughnessy, Seán O’Sullivan; Cian O’Keeffe, Mikey Houlihan, Paul Patrick O’Sullivan. Sub: Cathal Crosby. COUNTY MINOR LEAGUE County Minor League Division 3B (round 2)

Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) 0-8, Glenflesk 0-8

A free converted by Darragh McKeefry two minutes from time earned the GGC minors a share of the spoils in this Division 3B clash against Glenflesk in Cromane this afternoon.

It shouldn’t have come to that though when they look back on a first half when they were very wasteful in front of goal. They did most things right up to the final pass or shot. Encouragingly, they didn’t leave the missed efforts affect them as they managed to fight back to earn a draw which means they have three points from their first two games in the Division.

They started very well and led by 0-3 to 0-1 after 15 minutes with points form Oisin O’Connor, Dara Casey, and Darragh McKeefry.

At the break, GGC had a one-point lead 0-4 to 0-3.

However, at this stage injuries had robbed the team of Oisin and Dara and they also lost full-back Jack O’Sullivan, who was having a fine game to injury with 10 minutes left.

GGC made a fine start to the second half as Cathal Crosby, Liam Roche, and Tommy Quirke points put them ahead

0-7 to 0-4 after 40 minutes.

Glenflesk played much better in the last quarter as they started to dominate possession for the first time in the game. They hit four unanswered points to lead 0-8 to 0-7 with five minutes remaining. GGC steadied up and some fine play by man-of-thematch Conor Sugrue, Liam Smith, and Rian O’Donovan (who was fouled) allowed Darragh McKeefry to kick the equalising point from a 30-metre free.

A good display, despite the early wayward shooting, with plenty for the lads to work on.

Team and scorers: Daniel Kelly; Brice Dourieu, Jack O’Sullivan, Dylan Falvey; Seán Tadhg Sheahan, Conor Sugrue, Ethan Griffin; Oisín O’Connor 0-1, Liam Smith; Liam Roche 0-1, Darragh McKeefry 0-2 (0-1 free), Cathal Crosby 0-1; Tommy Quirke 0-1, Dara Casey 0-2, Rian O’Donovan. Subs: Jamie Naughton for O’O’ Connor (injured) 15m, Patrick Griffin for D Casey (injured) half-time, Eanna Healy for D Falvey 45m, Jason Clifford for J O’Sullivan (injured) 50m. Division 3B (round 3)

GGC 3-20, Ardfert 2-4

An excellent attacking display by the Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) minors on Saturday evening in Cromane – where 11 different scorers they hit 3-19 from play – continued their unbeaten start to the county league. This was their second game of the week after their draw against Glenflesk on the Monday evening.

The side’s only point from a free came from the boot of Darragh McKeefry after nine minutes. Outside of that Liam Roche was the game’s best attacker, kicking 1-6 from play, while at the back Jack O’Sullivan at full-back repelled a series of early Ardfert attacks when the game was still in the balance.

Ardfert got off to the better start (in a a game played 13-a-side) hitting the game’s first two scores but then GGC completely took over hitting 1-5 without reply with Roche slotting home the goal. Tommy Quirke (with two), Darragh McKeefry, and Rian O’Donovan also hit points in this spell.

From here till half-time it was all GGC with an Ardfert goal in the 15th minute the only blip. This cut the lead to three (1-5 to 1-2) but then the GGC lads cut loose again and hit eight unanswered points from Roche (three), O’Donovan (two), midfielder Liam Smith and halfbacks Ethan Griffin and Seán Tadhg Sheahan.

At the break GGC led 1-13 to 1-2.

Ardfert again started well and were within eight points (1-15 to 2-4) when their full-forward goaled. But that’s where their scoring ended as GGC settled back down again to play some lovely football, hitting another 2-5 (Brice Dourieu kicking 0-2 when he went forward) in the last quarter. What was pleasing for the management team was that substitutes all played their part with Darren O’Shea and Jason Clifford both hitting the net and Jamie Naughton chipping in with a point.

Well done lads, that’s two wins and a draw from their first three games in the county minor league. NEXT UP

DR CROKES

County League Round 2:

Dr Crokes 2-14 Beaufort 0-10 played in Lewis Road

Even though we played against a strong breeze in the first half we led at half time by a point, 0-7 to 0-6. Our first half display laid the foundations for this victory as to be in front at this stage was a big bonus. Beauforts good display over the hour deserved better than a 10 point defeat.

Our opponents had the first score of the game, a point but the teams were level at the end of the first quarter, four points each. It was nip and tuck again in the second quarter. Beaurfort hit our crossbar on two occassions in this 15 minutes as we outscored our opponents 0-3 to 0-2 for a half time lead of 0-7 to 0-6.

With the aid of the strong breeze in the second half we scored more freely than our opponents. In the third quarter we hot four points to Beauforts two points for a lead of 0-10 to 0-7. The decisive quarter for us was the last one in which we scored two goals, one by David Shaw and the other by Kieran O’Leary which was instrumental to our victory. One would also have to acknowledge the display over the hour by Tony Brosnan, who finished the game with six points in our 2-14 to 0-10 victory.

Team and Scorers: Nelo Doherty, John Payne (Capt) 0-1, Mike Moloney, David Naughton, David O’Leary, Alan O’Sullivan, Jason Lyne, Kieran Ward, Paul Clarke, Michael Potts, Gavin O’Shea, Brian Looney 0-3 (0-2 frees), Tony Brosnan 0-6 (0-2 frees), David Shaw 1-2, Kieran O’Leary 1-1.

Subs: Billy Courtey, Jack Griffin 0-1, Brian Fitzgerald, Mark O’Shea.

Under-14 girls the clubs under-14 girls kicked off their Division 3 County League campaign with a home game against Castleisland Desmond’s on Sunday evening last. Captained from right half back by Sarra Neher, the team gave a solid account of themselves on the night. The first half was a very even affair thanks to sound defending from the full back line of Debbie Maye, Kate O’Donoghue and Alicia Keane. Midfielder’s Pia Hickey and Kelly O’Sullivan made sure our forwards had plenty supply of ball throughout, and with the energetic running of Emma Kelly, Jean Foley and Lucy O’Leary there was a two point difference between the teams at half time. Kyla O’Leary, who had her first outing in the black and amber, and Emer Finn made their mark on the second half proceedings as did Laura O’Shea at wing back. The trio were ably assisted by Ella Galvin, Amy Leahy and Sinéad Oliver in the full forward line. The skills highlights of the game came from goalkeeper Faith Lockett, who made a wonderful save to keep the team in touch with their opponents and inspirational blocking by Katie McCarthy when the team needed it most. However, It was the concession of a goal in each half that led to the visitors being ahead at the final whistle.

The team’s next outing is away to Rathmore on April 8.

Senior Football: Fossa went down to Castlegregory in Round Two of the county league on Sunday. Castlegregory raced into an early four point lead before a point apiece by Tadhg and Mikey O’Shea kept Fossa in touch. Castlegregory continued to dominate proceedings as Fossa found it hard to get any grip on the game and they found themselves behind, 0-07 to 0-02 with 25 minutes gone on the clock. Fossa woke up and roared back into the game in the remaining minutes of the half, Tadhg O’Shea kicked a free and a point from play and Paudie Clifford kicked four superb points to give Fossa the lead in a game that they were second best for long periods of the half. The half time score was 0-08 points each. Castlegregory took control early on in the second half and picked off a few early scores. Fossa introduced a couple of subs and while they played ok in this half they struggled to contain a slick Castlegregory forward division while they could only muster two points in this half, these coming from Tadhg and Cian O’Shea. The final score was Castlegregory 0-17, Fossa 0-10. They now face into a critical few weeks of championship football, starting next Saturday, March 31, when they play Keel in the Junior Premier Championship in Killorglin at 5.30 p.m.

Minor County League: Ardfert 0-8, Fossa 5-10. Fossa proved much too strong for Ardfert in their second game of the Minor County league Division 3B game played in Ardfert on Monday
