Consider planting scented stock to enjoy gloriously fragranced evenings

-

NOW is the time to start considering which scented stocks which enhances summer evenings like no other adding colour and a fragrance. The garden is one place where long summer evenings can be enjoyed to their optimum and one way of enhancing them is by planting scented stock plants. These flowers are not only attractive but are an absolute delight on balmy summer nights producing a rich perfume scent.

There are several varieties of scented stocks and there is still time to make sowings if you have a prepared bed for them. The best varieties are ‘Night Scented’ stock which produces a lovely lilac coloured flower. Ideally, these should be grown beneath windows and near the home so as to fully enjoy the fragrance they emit on summer evenings, especially after watering when the fragrance is even more pungent.

Another excellent variety for fragrance is Dwarf Mix (Brompton Stocks). This is an upright bushy plant that produces beautiful cuttings for the vase. ‘Appleblossom’ is also popular with its pink and white flowers and powerful scent.

Stocks are a must for any garden and they can also be grown in containers and window boxes to good effect. All flowers look beautiful, but not all flowers are known for their fragrance. Scented stock plants meet this dual requirement and you’ll be delighted you planted them once those endless summer evenings kick in when the garden is delightfully scented beyond all expectations.
