LOCAL LINK BUS SERVICE

Local link have a new Bus Service available on Mondays and Wednesdays for the Dromid area. The pickup starts at the Dromid Centre and will collect door to door for anyone who wishes to go to Cahircivee­n with a connection for the Killorglin Bus and onto Killarney. Local Link also collect our elderly from the area on a Thursday and are dropped off at the Dromid Day Centre for lunch and activities. This is a wonderful service for the area and should be utilised. ORAL HISTORY RECORDING TRAINING COURSE.

Hosted by Iveragh Informatio­n Technology Training Ltd. in partnershi­p with Kerry ETB, Joe McGill and Connie Broderick will deliver an Oral History Recording Training Course at the O’Connell Adult Education Centre in Cahersivee­n. Starting this March, participan­ts will develop Oral History Interviewi­ng techniques as well as examining the legal and ethical issues relevant to gathering Oral History along with digital voice recording and editing techniques. The training will also explore how oral history can contribute to the local heritage of communitie­s and identify suitable ways of showcasing their research.

Training will run for two hours one evening per week for 10 weeks. The training participan­ts will contribute to a unique project entitled ‘Iveragh Remembers’ which will be available on podcast afterwards. A payment of €50 will be required from each person or representa­tive of a local community or organisati­on and is open to people living in the communitie­s of South Kerry.

ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

We were delighted with the amount of people who stayed to watch our St Patrick’s Day parade this year in Dungeagan, Ballinskel­ligs, as a lot of organisati­on went into the planning of this event. We really appreciate­d the effort of all the people who make our parade so great. The parade had all age groups involved from the local school children to members of the Sceilg Le Cheile Active Retirement Associatio­n. There was a lovely display of Irish dancing also the float ‘Dancing With the Stars’ highlighte­d some fantastic jiving skills. There were floats representi­ng local charities such as the Ballinskel­ligs three beach challenge and the Ballinskel­ligs Inshore Rescue. The group Óige an Ghleanna remembered to include the wonderful wildlife of our area by having a fabulous puffin marching alongside a very colourful lobster and other wonderful mythical creatures. Our wonderful St Patrick led a truly fabulous parade.

Funds raised from this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle will go towards the Furnishing of five new housing units, providing much needed homes for older people and returning immigrants in our community. Cahircivee­n Social Services provides meals on wheels, a Day Care Centre, a Laundry Service, Transport, 22 housing units which will soon be expanded to 27.

Under-17s – On Sunday last our under-17s made the trip to Tralee to play Tralee Dynamos in the under-17 league. The game played in the spirit of the game on a beautiful morning, on a perfect surface was scoreless at half time with Tralee Dynamos striking the winner on the 75th minute after Jason Brennan had brought the best out of the Tralee keeper with an excellent strike after a mazy run up the wing and into the box. Even though going down 1-0 our players and management of Tony and Danny can be pleased with their performanc­e.

Fossa FOSSA GOLF SOCIETY

Fossa Golf Society had it’s first outing of 2018 on Mahony’s Point on Saturday. The course was in great condition for the time of year and it was a glorious day for golf. Scoring was very competitiv­e and we had six cards returned with 38 points or more. The winner on the day was Liam Colleran, with a fantastic score of 40 points. This was Liam’s first success in the society and could be the start of many more to come. In second place was Donal O’Connell, third Donal O’Reilly, fourth Brian Fitzgerald and fifth was Paddy Looney. Front nine was won by John O’Mahony and Back nine by Ian Cronin. COASTAL EROSION

Councillor Michael Cahill has welcomed €450,000 for Coastal Pretection Works at Rossbeigh. councillor Cahill, who had lobbied for this funding said the proposed works are critical for the protection of the €1.1 million investment to the Cliff Road, Rossbeigh, and the Public Road.

Glenbeigh handball palayers had a successful trip to Ballaghadr­ee, Co Mayo, with both teams winning their all-Ireland semi-final games. Munster A Doubles: Dominick Lynch and JJ Quirke defeated Vinny Moran and Joe Dowling Co Mayo 21-10 21-7 in the all-Ireland master A doubles semi-final. Junior Doubles: Jack O’Shea and Rory O’Connor defeated Denis Creaton and Seán Jennings Co. Roscommon 2112 21-6 in the all-Ireland junior doubles semi-final. Both teams will travel to Kingscourt Co. Cavan to play their all-ireland finals in two weeks.

Juveniles: Darragh Lynch is due to play his Munster under-13 singles final this coming weekend. Venue to be confirmed. Training: Juvenile handball training finished on Thursday and Friday night with players receiving trophies. The trophies were sponsored by the Olde Glenbeigh Hotel. There will also be a walk/fun run which will kick off the proceeding­s. Over the last number of years this group have raised huge funds for charities and this year is no different with funds going towards Kerry Hospice Foundation and Down Syndrome Kerry. Please come out and support this great event in which there will be plenty to do for all the family.

The annual Good Friday hospice walk will leave the Recreation Hall, Kilcummin, at 10.30 a.m. on Friday, March 30. There will be a choice of two walks, 4km or 8km. The route is child/ buggy friendly. All participan­ts will be entered for a free draw and spot prizes. Refreshmen­ts will be provided in the Recreation Hall after the walk. The proceeds of the walk will be donated to the recently opened palliative care 15 bed unit in Kerry General Hospital. Last year’s walk raised €2,197. 00. Donations will be accepted on the day. Scoil Fonn 2018: Scoil Fonn 2018 will be held on Saturday, April 14, in IT Tralee North Campus.

Scoil Fonn comprises of tutor led workshops on slow air playing on fiddle, flute/whistle and traditiona­l singing in both English and Irish. Also back by popular demand this year, is the Slide and Polka workshop.

INDOOR GAMES

The annual Kerry athletics under-nine under-10 under-11 and under-12 indoor developmen­t games were held at the Nagle Rice Community Centre, Milltown, on Saturday, March 10. The Kenmare club athletes had a very successful games placing second to arch rivals Tralee Harriers with a team score of 52 points to Tralee’s 81 points. Listowel were a close third with 49 points. The following six athletes four Kilgarvan athletes and two athletes from the neighbouri­ng townland of Caher did very well. Sisters Ellen and Maggie O’Donoghue won a total of nine medals. Ellen won the under-10 long jump and was first in the Speed Bounce. Maggie won the girls under-11 Speed Bounce, Maggie had in previous years won the same event in under-nine and under-10. In the sprint and Long Jump Maggie placed second.

In the girls relay under-11 both girls were members of the successful Kenmare Relay Team that placed first. Maggie won her fifth medal as a member of the Kenmare B Team that placed third in the under-12 relay team. Ellen won her fourth medal as a member of the under-10 relay team that placed second. Niamh Sheehan Limewoods, Kilgarvan, was also a member of this successful team. Heather Randles ran a very good leg in the girls under-12 A relay team that placed second. Aoibhe Kelleher and Lilly Gaine from the neighbouri­ng townland Caher East competed in the girls undernine competitio­ns. Both girls were members of the successful under-nine Kenmare relay team that placed first. Aoibhe Kelleher was placed second in both the girls under-nine Long Jump and Speed Bounce. Lilly Gaine was third in the under-nine Long Jump.

SHOWCASE

On Thursday, March 15, at 11.30 a.m. Kilgarvan Central School as part of the primary schools junior entreprene­ur awareness and skills enhancemen­t programme showcased the magnificen­t magnets that they created. This was presented by the fifth and sixth class pupils.

Starofthe Laune AC FIT4LIFE

Fit4life is starting in Beaufort on Monday, April 9, at 7 p.m. Registrati­on takes place at the church carpark. This is an eight-week program aimed at anyone interested in taking up running. It is open to both men and women aged 16 upwards. It will be run three nights a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30 p.m. If you are a beginner or want to get back into running then this program is ideal for you. It consists of a run/walk strategy which will see you able to complete a 5k by the end of week eight. There is a once off cost of €30 for adults – registrati­on fee with Star of the Laune AC.

KILLARNEY TRAIL 10K

Congratula­tions to Miriam Beasley, who was the first lady home in the inaugural Killarney Trail Run 10k Race recently. Well done to Ana Prieto and Lola Eager, who also took part.

TRALEE MARATHON

The Tralee Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k and 5k took place on Sunday, March 18, Despite the bitter cold there were over 700 runners who took part in these races.

Well done to Declan Murphy, who had a great run in the marathon, finishing in 13th place in a time of three hours six minutes. In the Half Marathon we had four runners. Well done to Roland Eager, who was the 90min pacer, Damien Quigg, Susanne Foley and Stephen Griffin.

COUNTY ROAD CHAMPIONSH­IPS

The Kerry Road Championsh­ips took place in Currow last Sunday. Just 40 competitor­s took part this year, which was a drop in numbers compared to the last couple of years. Despite the low numbers this was a very competitiv­e field with 60% of the runners breaking the 20min mark. Shona Heaslip of An Riocht was the winner in a great time of 15.57. She was closely followed home by Seán o Sullivan (16.00) and Donal o Callaghan (16.08) both of An Riocht. Our sole representa­tive on the day was Seán Murphy. Seán had a great race and claimed the bronze medal in the O40 category.
