A message from Captain Derry McCarthy ...

- Derry McCarthy, Captain of the Men’s Club and the Men’s Club Committee

I’M extremely proud to have the honour of the captaincy in what is a great and historic club. What makes it even more special is that my captaincy coincides with the club’s 125th Anniversary, which is added reason to be proud.

The Men’s Club, along with Lady Captain Sheila Crowley and her Committee, the Club Council and Club Manager Cormac Flannery and staff, are all looking forward to the many celebrations planned for this anniversary year and it will indeed be a momentous occasion for members, guests and visitors. The central theme will focus on the club members and enjoying and remembering the year as having been very special for them.

The celebrations were started by the club bestowing an Honorary Life Membership on Paul McGinley - our former Ryder Cup player and Captain of the winning European Ryder Cup team at Gleneagles in Scotland in 2014. Paul’s address to us in his acceptance of that honour will long be remembered for his kind and gracious remarks about our club.

The icing on the cake, so to speak, would be if one of our Club Teams, who will be taking part in the National Competitions, could bring national honours back to our club by winning a national champi- onship during the year. With this in mind, we would like to urge our members to go out and support all teams as these competitions are played on a knockout basis, so it is essential that they and their managers are given the support they deserve from the very outset.

Lastly, the club has planned commemorative plaques for select places around Killarney town associated with our foundation. This is for future generations to recognise that we have indeed marked this special anniversary for our club in a most tangible way.
