The Boys are back on Sunday mornings at 10am, while the Girls are back on Wednesday evenings at 6pm. SENIOR: Con Keating Park in Caherciveen was the venue of the Intermediate Championship Round 1 tie between Laune Rangers & Waterville on Saturday evening. Laune Rangers had Peter Crowley back to the team for the first time this season, but had to make do without Kieran Crowley & David Costelloe through injury, while John Tyther was deemed unfit to start also. This saw a host of players make their Championship debut for Rangers as Jason Browne, Cathal Doyle, Daragh O’Connor, Dáire Cleary & Shane Mangan all experienced Club Championship football for the first time in a starting team with an average age of 23. While the game was played in glorious sunshine, underfoot conditions were far from ideal and made it difficult for both teams to put fluid play together. Rangers took the lead inside of 15 seconds as Dáire Cleary – making his first Senior start – collected the ball from Shane Daly off the throw in and slotted an excellent point. Waterville’s first chance came after 3 minutes but Barry O’Dwyer’s shot at goal was saved excellently by Jason Browne. The sides went point-for-point for most of the first half, with Eoin O’Sullivan and Colm O’Shea trading frees before Shane Daly & Paddy Curran exchanged long range points from play to see Rangers lead by 0-3 to 0-2 with 15 minutes played. Eoin O’Sullivan tied up the scores with another free for Waterville, but points from Shane Mangan and Dáire Cleary put Rangers ahead by two – Mangan’s shot at goal taking paint off the crossbar as it flashed over, before Cleary slotted a point from a near impossible angle. However, Waterville finished the half strongly and scored points through Jamie O’Sullivan (2) and Cillian Clifford to take the lead by the minimum at the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-5, Waterville 0-6. Laune Rangers were level 4 minutes after the restart as Colm O’Shea pointed a free, while Barry O’Dwyer & Fiachra Clifford (free) points were the only scores in the remainder of the third quarter as the sides were level at 0-7 a piece with 15 minutes to play. Waterville were much stronger than Rangers in the final quarter, as the experience of playing together as a group began to shine through. They scored four unanswered points through Jamie O’Sullivan, Barry O’Dwyer (free), Paddy Curran and substitute Keith Moran. Fiachra Clifford reduced the gap to three with a pointed free but Barry O’Dwyer kicked the insurance point with Cillian Clifford adding a point with the last kick of the game to give Waterville the win. For Rangers, Dáire Cleary stepped up to Senior football with ease and played well with limited possession. Carey brothers Johnny and Patrick held the middle of the defence firm with Johnny in particular providing much needed experience at the back. Laune Rangers: Jason Browne, Cormac Johnston, Jonathan Carey (capt), Neil O’Brien, Cathal Doyle, Patrick Carey, Ronan Sayers, Shane Daly (0-1), Peter Crowley, Daragh O’Connor, Fiachra Clifford (0-2f), Jack O’Connor, Dáire Cleary (0-2), Shane Mangan (0-1), Colm O’Shea (0-2f). Subs used: John Tyther for J O’Connor, Padraig Murphy for D O’Connor, Cian O’Shea for Colm O’Shea. SENIOR FIXTURE: The Intermediate Championships continues with the second round away to Castleisland Desmonds on Sunday at 2:30pm. U-16 BOYS: Laune Rangers were defeated by Austin Stacks this evening in the Central Region Under 16 Division One League. On a wet night in Connolly Park, a young Laune Rangers side took the field with just five players starting in their second year of Under 16 football. Austin Stacks were much stronger from the outset, leading by 1-5 to 0-2 after fifteen minutes, with Gearoid Hassett (2, 1 free) & Matthew Leslie (free) pointing for Rangers. Hassett & Leslie added a point each during the second quarter, but a second Stacks goal put them in the driving seat going in at the break:- Half Time Score:- Austin Stacks 2-5, Laune Rangers 0-5. Austin Stacks pressed home their advantage in the second half, as they went on to win by 3-14 to 0-9. Gearoid Hassett was one bright note in the evening as he added two further pointed frees, with a lot of the fouling committed on him as he caused trouble to the Stacks defence time and again. Two points from play from Matthew Leslie and James Treacy were also of a high standard, but Rangers were outclassed by a team who were mostly in their second year in the grade. Laune Rangers: Cian Naylor, Patrick Brennan, Matt Reenstierna, Niall Fenton Toms, Calum Moriarty, Darragh Mangan, Cathal Crowley, Rory O’Connor, Calum Russell, Mike O’Donnell, Gearóid Hassett (0-5, 4f), Jack Healy, Marc Clifford, Matthew Leslie (0-2, 1f), James Treacy (0-1). Subs: Daniel Evans, James Byrne, Jake Reenstierna, Jack Foley. They made their second trip to Tralee in consecutive weeks on Bank Holiday Monday to face Na Gaeil – no result at time of submission UNDER 16 BOYS FIXTURE: Laune Rangers have their first home game of the season against Castlegregory in the Central Region Under 16 League Division 1 on Monday next, April 9th. Throw in 7pm in JP O’Sullivan Park. UNDER 14 BOYS: Laune Rangers got off to a great start to their County Under 14 League campaigns on Wednesday evening, with wins in both Division 1 and Division 9 for the Blue Team and White Team respectively. In Division 1, Austin Stacks were the visitors to JP O’Sullivan Park and Rangers were in a ascendancy from the beginning, and outscored Austin Stacks by 2-11 to 0-1 in the first half – Darragh O’Grady finishing to the net for a great goal after some great play in the build up by Eoghan Hassett and Jack O’Sullivan. The second goal was palmed in by Adam Owens after Eoghan Hassett had passed across the square. The second half was much the same as the first, as Rangers continued to increase their lead. They went on to add another two goals in the second half with a further two goals and seven extra points as light began to fade towards the end of the game – Jack O’Sullivan slotting the ball home following some great link play in front of goal while Cillian Foley finished a soccer style shot to the net for the game’s final goal. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 4-18, Austin Stacks 0-2. Outside of the excellent scoring prowess by the Rangers forwards, all of whom put in impressive performances in slippery conditions with Eoghan Hassett kicking some great scores in particular, there was some great rearguard action by the backs led by full back Aona O’Shea. In all, it was a hugely pleasing showing from 1 to 18. Laune Rangers Blue: Adam Carey, Tim Mangan, Aona O’Shea, Cathal O’Callaghan, Killian Spillane, Tom Whittleton (0-1), Ciarán O’Sullivan, Adam Owens (1-4, 2f), Ryan Diggin (0-1), Darragh O’Grady (1-4), Cillian Foley (1-0), Jack Lynch, Eoghan Hassett (0-7, 1f), Darragh Evans, Jack O’Sullivan. Subs: Eoghan Joy, Senan O’Meara, Joseph Cronin Langham. Laune Rangers White Team travelled to Direen, Killarney to face Legion in Division 9 and, much like the Division 1 tie, Rangers were the stronger side from the outset. A couple of early points gave Rangers a lead they would never relinquish, and went on to a relatively comfortable victory for a valuable two league points. It was a good performance from back to front, as many of the Rangers scores were worked out from defence. Goals by Oisín Lynch (3) and Cian Fogarty (2) as well as some excellent point taking by Lynch and Colin Griffin capped off an excellent attacking display. Final Score:- Killarney Legion 3-4, Laune Rangers 5-14. Laune Rangers White (13 a side): Micheál O’Shea, Dara Joy, Oisin Birmingham, Shane Kelliher, Tom Garry, Devin Hogan, John Burke, Killian Buckley, Jamie Healy, Oisin Lynch, Colin Griffin, Cian Fogarty, David Crowley. U-14 BOYS FIXTURE: The County Under 14 Leagues continue on Wednesday, April 4th as the Rangers Blue team travel to Glenfesk in Division 1, while the White Team host Ballymacelligott in Division 9 – both throw in at 7pm U-12 BOYS: Laune Rangers will have three teams competing in the County U-12 Competition , which begins on Sunday.
