Kilcummin into pole position in Group 1

-

COUNTY IFC GROUP 1 ROUND 2 Milltown / Castlemaine 0-9 Kilcummin 1-14

AFTER a disappointing defeat to Brosna in the first round, Milltown / Castlemaine needed to grab the chance a home draw afforded them with both hands against Kilcummin on Sunday afternoon.

Alas, despite starting encouragingly enough they were on the back foot after fifteen minutes when William Maher finished to the back of the Milltown / Castlemaine net. It was a great fillip to Kilcummin who were forced to field without a number of regulars who were out with injuries.

Milltown / Castlemaine to their great credit rallied well in the aftermath of Maher’s goal, but their rivals from East Kerry continued to hold the whip hand in the lead up to half-time and held a five point lead at the break – 1-7 to 0-5. Kilcummin were, however, slightly fortunate not to conceded a goal too. With twenty seven minutes gone Donal Dennehy was denied by the post and the rebound to Brendan Delaney was brilliantly saved by Brendan Kealy.

The second half saw Kilcummin maintain our advantage throughout driven on by the likes of Kevin Gorman and Shane McSweeney. A long range free and a penalty save from Brendan Kealy (Derek Twiss with the shot) were significant but points by Philip Casey (two) and the excellent Sean O’Leary (one) complimented the scoring power of the forwards.

Killcummin’s fate is in their own hands heading into this weekend.

Brosna 0-10 Glenbeigh/Glencar 1-11

THIS was a glorious chance for Brosna to put themselves into a great position to challenge for a place in the semi-finals.

After a somewhat surprise victory over Milltown / Castlemaine the visit of Glenbeigh / Glencar gave them a real chance. On neutral ground Glenbeigh / Glencar would probably be fancied, but in Páirc na Féile there was every chance Brosna could do a number on their fellow All Ireland junior club champions.

For long stretches of the game it looked like they were more than capable of getting the way, but Glenbeigh / Glencar showed serious grit to dig out a result in north Kerry on Sunday afternoon.

Glenbeigh/Glencar got off to a great start going into a two point lead with both scores coming from Tommy Cahill. Tom McGoldrick got the scoring underway for Brosna with a well taken free.

The first half followed a similar pattern. Glenbeigh / Glencar looked ever so slightly on top, but Brosna hung on in there and with four unanswer points went in at half-time just a single point in arrears – 0-7 to 0-6.

After a cagey opening Brosna seemed to be holding their own. It was 0-8 to 0-9 with the game reaching the final stages, but a goal for Glenbeight’s Caolim Teahan put the visitors in the boxseat. There was no way back fro Brosna and two further fine points from Danial Griffin and substitute Haullie Breen closed out the match.
