SENIOR: Laune Rangers are facing into a Championship relegation playoff following a second defeat in Group 3 of the Intermediate Championship against Desmonds in Castleisland on Sunday afternoon. The loss of Peter Crowley to injury was a big blow for Rangers, as John Tyther returned to the starting team in his place. David Costelloe remained out following injury a fortnight ago in Ballydonoghue, while the elbow injury sustained by Kieran Crowley in the same game may have ended his season. Laune Rangers actually took the lead from a well taken Shane Mangan point in the first minute, but Desmonds scored five unanswered points in the next 10 minutes through Adam Donoghue, Danny Hickey (2 frees), Thomas Hickey (free) and Cian O’Connor. A 13th minute Daragh O’Connor point for Rangers stopped the one-way run on the scoreboard, but the hosts continue to dominate and added another five in a row through Danny Hickey (3, 1 free), Tomás Lynch & Kieran Brennan. Rangers almost struck the net late in the half, as a good move out of midfield saw Fiachra Clifford feed Dáire Cleary who unselfishly passed the ball across the square, but the ball was just out of reach of the onrushing Jack O’Connor who could only get a toe on it to put it wide. Colm O’Shea did manage to put a free over the bar from the 45 metre line before the short whistle to leave Rangers trailing by 7 at the break. Half Time Score:- Castleisland Desmonds 0-10, Laune Rangers 0-3. The home side got off to the best possible start to the second half, as veteran full forward Kieran Brennan – a first half replacement for Thomas Hickey – got on the end of a high ball at the edge of the square to find the net. Desmonds goalkeeper added Stephen Bartlett came upfield to score a 45 and, after Fiachra Clifford & Luka Brosnan had traded points, Rangers ‘keeper Jason Browne kicked a 45’ of his own. Colm O’Shea pointed a nice score from a difficult angle for Rangers, before Jason Browne dived to make an acrobatic save from a Cian O’Connor shot that seemed destined for the top corner. The resulting 45’ was again scored by home goalkeeper Bartlett but John Tyther clawed another point back for the visitors from a well taken effort to leave Desmonds leading by 1-13 to 0-7 with a quarter to play, as Laune Rangers introduced Darragh O’Sullivan for his Senior debut. Colm O’Shea and Danny Hickey exchanged frees before Cian O’Connor pointed a free of his own, but Laune Rangers spirits were lifted somewhat by a terrific solo goal by Patrick Carey – the young wing back with an excellent run up the left flank ending with a delightful finish into the top right corner of the net. Cathal Doyle was shown a black card to see his day end and was replaced by Chris Riordan, and a Tomás Lynch point with effectively the last kick of the game saw the home side come away with a fully deserved victory. Also, huge credit goes to the Desmonds club for the pristine condition of the pitch on the day. Full Time Score:- Castleisland Desmonds 1-16, Laune Rangers 1-8. Results elsewhere – and the ‘head to head’ tie-breaker – leaves Laune Rangers now certain to finish bottom of Group Three and will go into a 4 team relegation playoff. Glenflesk – now guaranteed a path to the Semi Finals – travel to Killorglin in Round Three while Waterville host Desmonds. Castleisland Desmonds:- Stephen Bartlett (0-2, 2 ‘45’s), David Lynch, Barry Lynch, David Shanahan, Luka Brosnan (0-1), Brian Leonard, Luke Lyons, Pat Fitzgerald (capt), Adam Donoghue (0-1), Tomás Lynch (0-2), Patrick Hickey, Cian D O’Connor (0-2, 1f), Danny Hickey (0-6, 4f), Thomas Hickey (0-1f), Eoin Murphy. Subs: Kieran Brennan (1-1) for T Hickey, Seán Lynch for Murphy, Pa White for Shanahan, Graham O’Connor for C O’Connor. Laune Rangers:- Jason Browne (0-1 ‘45’), Neil O’Brien, Jonathan Carey (capt), Ronan Sayers, Patrick Carey (1-0), Cormac Johnston, Cathal Doyle, Shane Daly, Shane Mangan (0-1), Daragh O’Connor (0-1), Jack O’Connor, John Tyther (0-1), Dáire Cleary, Colm O’Shea (0-3, 2f), Fiachra Clifford (0-1f). Subs: Padraig Murphy for J O’Connor, Darragh O’Sullivan for Mangan, Chris Riordan for Doyle (bc rep).

SENIOR FIXTURE: Laune Rangers host Glenflesk in the final Group game of the Intermediate Championship. The game takes place on this Sunday, April 15th at 2:30pm in JP O’Sullivan Park. UNDER 16 BOYS: Laune Rangers picked up their first win of the season with an away victory over Na Gaeil in Killeen, Tralee on Bank Holiday Monday. The home side hit the ground running from the beginning, and led by 0-4 to 0-1 after fifteen minutes with a Gearoid Hassett free all that Rangers had to show for their first quarter. Na Gaeil had the majority of possession for the remainder of the half, but couldn’t convert their advantage in play to scores, due to some astute defending by the Rangers backs. Gearoid Hassett added another free for Rangers, but Na Gaeil slotted two more points (1 free) before the break. Half Time Score:- Na Gaeil 0-6, Laune Rangers 0-2. Laune Rangers were a different side in the second half. Points from Jack Healy (2) and Matthew Leslie had the visitors back to within a point, but a goal against the run of play for Na Gaeil nullified Rangers’ second half scores – a 45’ dropping into the square as the setting sun caught the Rangers defence bindsighted and the ball clipped the underside of the bar before hitting the net. Gearoid Hassett and Matthew Leslie both pointed to halve the deficit – the latter’s point particularly excellent from long range – before a 46th minute Laune Rangers goal gave them the lead for the first time. Sean Cleary broke out from defence on a superb run up the right flank before passing to Mikey O’Donnell who made no mistake in hitting the bottom corner of the goal. This left Rangers leading by 1-7 to 1-6 with a quarter to play. Gearoid Hassett added two more points (1 free) to extend Rangers lead before another well taken Matt Leslie point put four between the sides. Na Gaeil had their share of possession but the Rangers defence cut out the chances time and again. Na Gaeil managed a slot a free to leave a goal between the sides, but when Rangers got upfield on another attack and drew a foul, Gearoid Hassett converted the free with the final kick of the game. Full Time Score:- Na Gaeil 1-7, Laune Rangers 1-11. The centre of Rangers’ defence was solid on the night with Matt Reenstierna and Darragh Mangan aided by their wide men especially Sean Cleary. Rory O’Connor & Calum Moriarty edged the midfield battle while the forwards were economical with their chances with Jack Healy & Gearoid Hassett capitalizing, while the stand out player on the night was Matthew Leslie who was dangerous in attack and solid in covering defence. Laune Rangers Team:- Jake Reenstierna, Patrick Brennan, Matt Reenstierna, Niall Fenton Toms, Sean Cleary, Darragh Mangan, James Byrne, Calum Moriarty, Rory O’Connor, Calum Russell, Matthew Leslie (0-3), Mikey O’Donnell (10), Jack Healy (0-2), Gearoid Hassett (0-6, 4f), Marc Clifford. Subs: James Treacy for Clifford, Cathal Crowley for Healy; Daniel Evans, Jack Foley. Laune Rangers hosted Castlegregory on Monday last in JP O’Sullivan Park – no result at time of submission UNDER 16 BOYS FIXTURE: Laune Rangers An Ghaeltacht in Round 4 of the Central Region Under 16 Competition. The game takes place on Monday next, April 16th at 7pm in JP O’Sullivan Park, Killorglin. UNDER 14 BOYS: The second round of the County Under 14 Leagues took place on Wednesday evening. Glenflesk and Laune Rangers served up a fantastic contest and couldn’t be separated at the final whistle so Division One points were shared. Meanwhile in Killorglin, Laune Rangers had a comfortable victory over Ballymacelligott in Division 9. Played in Barraduff Community

Field, the Division One encounter between Glenflesk and Laune Rangers was hugely exciting. Glenflesk took the lead early in the game with three unanswered points in the first 6 minutes. However, Rangers were level by the 9th minute with points from Jack O’Sullivan (2) and Jack Lynch. An Eoghan Hassett point to give Rangers the lead was quickly cancelled out by a pointed free for Glenflesk but, aided by some stout defending by the Rangers backs, the visitors kicked three unanswered points of their own through Adam Owens, Jack O’Sullivan and a great long range effort from Darragh O’Grady to lead by 0-7 to 0-4 after 18 minutes. Two points from Glenflesk reduced the gap to the minimum, but Rangers scored their first score of the evening in the 23rd minute as Jack Lynch put a deft finish past the home goalkeeper following a super move that involved some great kick passing. Lynch added another point five minutes later and Rangers second goal came almost immediately after – Adam Owens firing home from close range. Glenflesk had a late goal chance before the break, but Adam Carey saved a rasping shot before Tom Whittleton cleared the danger. Half Time Score:- Glenflesk 0-6, Laune Rangers 2-8. Adam Carey saved Rangers again at the beginning of the second half, and it was an important save as Glenflesk (both frees) & Rangers through Eoghan Hassett (1 play, 1 free) exchanged two points each in the first 5 minutes after the restart. However, the home side gained some momentum during the third quarter and went on to score four points as well as their only goal of the game to trail by a solitary point at 1-12 to 2-10 with 15 minutes to play. Rangers restored parity in terms of balance of play, with Ciarán O’Sullivan gaining advantage on the left side of the Rangers defence. Eoghan Hassett doubled Rangers’ advantage with an excellent score but Glenflesk were level on the 53rd minute with two further points (1 free). Hassett put Rangers ahead once more late on but, with the final kick of the game, Glenflesk equalized for a deserved draw. Full Time Score:- Glenflesk 1-15, Laune Rangers 2-12. Laune Rangers ‘Blue’:- Adam Carey, Tim Mangan, Aona O’Shea, Cathal O’Callaghan, Killian Spillane, Tom Whittleton, Ciarán O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Grady (0-1), Ryan Diggin, Darragh Evans, Eoghan Hassett (0-5, 2f), Jack Lynch (1-2), Adam Owens (1-1), Cillian Foley, Jack O’Sullivan (0-3).
