Valentia Cable Station included in plan
THE Valentia Cable Station was recently included in the National Development plan, in addition to already being on the County Development Plan and the Fáilte Ireland National Plan. It is also very much to the fore in the Government’s 2018/2027 plan for Culture, Language and Heritage. This plan is backed to the tune of €85million. In view of the UNESCO status currently sought by the Valentia Island Trans-Atlantic Cable Foundation Board this development is quite significant.
Investing in Our Culture, Language and Heritage 2018 – 2027 is a ten-year plan setting out the Government’s commitment for capital investment of almost €1.2 billion in Ireland’s culture, language and heritage.
Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Josepha Madigan was recently joined at a special forum to launch the plan by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Minister for Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe, and Government Chief Whip and Minister of State for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands Joe McHugh. In its investment of €85 million in our historic environment it will include initiatives to revitalise the historic cores of urban centres, restoration of the Ulster canal and inland waterways; maintain and protect heritage assets like the Valentia Island Cable Station, and investments to improve public access to and restoring historic buildings to use.
