Islanders out of ‘18 championship

-

THE Valentia Young Islanders’ senior footballers took part in the County Junior Chamionship this year. In a new format the championship contained four groups of four. Valentia’s group consisted of Moyvane, Renard and Ballyduff.

They defeated Moyvane at home but lost away in Killorglin to Ballyduff. Since then Ballyduff as the top team have qualified for the semi-finals (only one team qualifies from each group). Valentia’s last-round game versis Renard, scheduled for Sunday 15, in Renard was cancelled due to field conditions.

If played the game is of no qualification significance because, as stated, Ballyduff had already qualified.

Meanwhile, a look back in time illustrates the healthy numbers enjoyed by the Young Islanders when fielding teams in decades gone by.

The Valentia team which lost the 1976 South Kerry final to Waterville was: John Lyne; Dan O’Connor; Brendie Murphy; Diarmaid Lynch; Mícheál Lyne; Mossie O’Driscoll; Nealie Lyne; Pat O’Connell; Timothy Lyne; John Paul Curran; Ger O’Driscoll (captain); Seertha O’Donoghue; Stevie O’Connor; Mick O’Connell; Nealie Murphy.

The subs were as follows: Ger Lynch; GG O’Sullivan; Patrick Lyne; Pat O’Connor; Michael O’Donoghue; Joe Lynch; Michael O’Driscoll; Michael A O’Connell; Muiris O’Donoghue; Joseph Lynch; Dermot Walsh; Danny Healy; Liam Lynch.
