Schools combine for night of laughs

COMEDY returns on May 1 to St John’s Hall in Castleisland Presentation Secondary School

A joint Transition Year programme will see the girls of ‘The Pres’ and the boys of St Patrick’s Secondary School pooling their talents for one night only at 7:30pm. Admission for adults is €10, and €5 for students and OAPS.

“Following on from the success of last year’s TY comedy drama night, this year the TYs chose to focus on comedy again.

On the night the students will be performing seven different comedy sketches.

A firm favourite by people at last year’s drama night was a scene from a play by Jimmy Keary, The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley, so therefore this year’s roup decided to focus on his material again.

Jimmy Keary, a playwright from Rathowen in County Westmeath, has been writing plays and sketches for over 20 years.

“Jimmy was very kind and sent us a few comedy sketches, five of which the students chose to focus on: Father of the Bride; A Little Deception; A Lotto Trouble; A Perfect Match and Wedded Blitz,” according to the teachers involved.

“All sketches will be sure to give everyone a great laugh on the night as there are lots of fantastic one-liners in them. The students have really enjoyed practicing over the last number of months and are eager to showcase the hard work they have putin.

“Four teachers are involved in the preparation for this year’s drama night: Noreen O’Shea, Joan McElligott, Margaret O’Sullivan and Mairéad Lane-Cronin.”

The teachers have enjoyed seeing the students flourish over the past few months and notice how their confidence has improved greatly due to their involvement in the drama classes.

“The help of our caretaker John Naughton is also greatly appreciated as he makes the set for the drama productions.

“Tickets are available to be bought at the door on the night or at any of the schools in the lead up to the big night. Get ready for a night full of laughs and enjoyment for all.”
