The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

A book for the ages...

-

ONE of the greatest gifts the present generation can leave behind is a history for the next generation to cherish. That’s something the folks in Rock Street know and thing or two about having recently published a tome of the locality’s sporting and cultural history.

‘A Centenary History: 1917-2017’ is the culmination of many months hard work and the product of endless hours of research and coordination. The good news is that the final product is a triumph that will make life a whole lot easier for the club committee in 2117 when they sit down to plan the club’s 200th anniversary.

The old adage ‘many hands make light work’ is never more apparent in the journey of this book and names like Billy Ryle, Martin Collins, Eddie Barrett, Kerry O’Shea, Tadgh McMahon, Tim Slattery, Tony O’Keefe, Seamus Smith and Adrienne McLoughlin, deserve special praise for their input. This group was also supported by Club Chairman Liam Lynch, Vice Chair Mairéad Fernane and Club Secretary Elma Nix to name but a few.

Former Uachtarán CLG, Aogán O Ferghail, summed it up perfectly in the Forward for the book when he said ‘Your club has served your ‘corner’ of Tralee with distinction and this legacy endures...’

The book is a treasure trove of memories and the many names and faces from the past that smile at you when flicking through its pages is a journey all ‘Rockies’ should experience. The book costs €25 and is available from Austin Stacks GAA Club including at Paudie Commane’s Book Shop, Kevin Barry’s Shop, Niall Nolan’s Garage, and Garvey’s Super Valu, Rock Street.
