Scór season finally draws to a close

- Jack Hennessy

THE curtain came down on all Scór competition for 2018 as 140 plus children took to the stage for the very popular Scór na bPáistí County Finals which was the brainchild of the late Siobhain Cottor back in 2004 and held in the Community Centre Foilmore last Sunday.

The fabulous venue vibrated with the excitement and energy brought by all the participants who all attend primary school. All the children were a credit to their clubs, parents and mentors and were a joy to watch all day.

PJ Mulvihill, North Kerry Football Cultural Officer, in his role for the first time at county final level was an excellent Fear an Tí and ensured the whole day went off without a glitch.

Cultural Officer of Coiste Scór Chiarrai, Christy Killeen, thanked everyone who were involved during the day, including Lee Strand for sponsoring the Perpetual Shields for the winning club of each category, Estuary Print Ballylongford, sponsor of the Siobhain Cottor Memorial Shield, and Trophy World Tralee, sponsor for the Overall Club trophy and the Healy / Connor Perpetual Cup for the club that has participated most in Scór disciplines over the duration of the competitions, Scór Sinsear, Scór na nÓg and Scór na bPaistí. Special mention went to all the day’s participants.

The Chairman went on to thank the Foilmore Community Centre and the Intermediate School Killorglin for hosting the activities, the judges and Coiste Scór Chiarraí especially Runaí Suzanne Ní Laoire, who did Trojan work on the day.

Each and every child performed to the best of their ability and the overall show was electric with the huge attendance really enjoying the talent on show. Certainly the competent Judges on the day had the tough job of picking a winner and runner up such was the standard of competition in all disciplines.

The day got off to an early start at the Intermediate School Killorglin with the County Finals of the Quiz opening the days proceedings. Twenty-five teams from around the County took part and at the end of a titanic battle it was a special day for the Tralee clubs with Na Gaeil securing first place with 24 marks out of a possible 30.

Their team was Iarla Hanafin, Shane Kelly, Rory Hanafin and Ruadhan Clifford. In second place came Tralee Parnells team of Donnacha Buttimer, Peter Doyle, Oisin O’Sullivan and Liam Cooper.

Moving on to the South Kerry venue for the remainder of the disciplines and here it was a memorable day for both Dromid and Renard who jointly scooped the Siobhain Cottor Memorial Shield with Dromid winning both Figure and Set Dancing while Renard collected the Leiriu and Recitation disciplines.

Further success went to South Kerry as St Michaels Foilmore’s Ellen O’Sullivan winning Solo Singing. Gneeveguilla’s Sean O’Keeffe for the second time in two years danced his way to success in the Sean Nós Dancing, Instrumental Music went to Kilcummin and the Ballad Group went to St Pats, Blennerville; Runners-up in the competition who were also presented with medals were Figure Dancing, Ballymacelligott, Solo Singing, Laura Power, Firies, Recitation, Stephan Carrig, Ballyduff, Ballad Group, Waterville, Sean Nos Dancing, Harry O’Sullivan, St. Senans, Leiriu, St. Pats, Instrumental Music, Glenbeigh/Glencar and Set Dancing, Spa.
