WEST MUNSTER U-16 CUP FINAL Abbeyfeale 17 Castleisland 17
THE West Munster Cup Final took place in O’Dowd Park Tralee last Sunday as Abbeyfeale and Castleisland battled it out for the silverware.
This was a game that had it all and kept the large attendance enthralled from first whistle to last. Aided by a significant wind Abbeyfeale spent the majority of the half camped in their opponents area of the pitch and Castleisland struggled to make any headway Abbeyfeale went over for their first try when Gearoid Scanell crossed the whitewash near the corner. The same player beat some weak defending to go over again with five minutes remaining in the half.. Eliah Riordan added the extras and Abbeyfeale led 12-0 at the half-time whistle.
It was Castleisland’s turn to make use of the elements in the second half and good interplay between backs and forwards saw Matthew O’Connor register their first try. David Dillon added the conversion and with the score at 12-7 it was all to play for.
Abbeyfeale pushed 17-7 ahead when Sean Kilbridge scored off the back of an impressive driving maul and Abbeyfeale now led by 17-7 with just a quarter of the game to play.
Castleisland, however, showed some great spirit to launch a comeback. David Dillon scored a penalty after sustained pressure and Adam Broderick scored a blistering try when racing in off his wing to touch down following a forty metre run. The extras were
added by David Dillon to tie the game at 17-17. It looked like Castleisland may run out winners as momentum was well and truly with the Kerry side.
Castleisland had one last chance to grab victory near the end of the game but their penalty sailed just wide. The final whistle sounded, and Abbeyfeale collected the cup as per rule, having scored the first try of the game. Gearoid Scannell was excellent for Abbeyfeale as was Conor Kerins for Castleisland in a hugely entertaining final.
