The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

Countdown to this year’s awards night

- Kevin Hughes, Editor, The Kerryman

THERE’S nothing like the cheer that rings out when the winners of the Kerry Community Awards are announced.

And last year was no exception – indeed the delight and unbridled enthusiasm displayed by all involved in the Kerry Social Farming Project was quite simply a joy to behold.

Reflecting on the event a full 12 months later, there’s no question that the right decision was made. Already focussing heavily on farms in the south Kerry area, Kerry Social Farming Project has flourished over the past year, stretching further into north Kerry and the community awards has been a catalyst.

Members proudly made the long trek to Donegal to take part in the All-Ireland Pride of Place Awards where the project was displayed as an example of good practice for others to follow and long may that continue.

Last year’s awards returned following a three year break which gave the organising comnmittee time to reflect and make further improvements to the selection process and the showcase evening itself.

The venue is The Dromhall Hotel – a long term supporter of the awards – and this year’s event takes place on Thursday, May 10 with 20 groups making it to the awards banquet.

Judges have been impressed by the high standard of the applications received and by the fact that there have been a significant number of new applicants this year.

Gold and silver awards, accompanied by cash prizes, will be presented on the night, as well as special awards and the overall winner’s award.

Kerry Community Awards rewards and encourages community efforts to improve our social, economic, cultural and environmental quality of life.

In this supplement The Kerryman features all 20 groups shortlisted by this year’s judging panel. The Kerryman is a founding member of the event alongside Southern Advertising and Kerry County Council and we wish all involved the very best of luck on the night.
