WORLD FIDDLE DAY

On Saturday May 19 World Fiddle Day will once again be held in Scartaglin. Over the past five years World Fiddle Day has evolved and involved the other traditions found in Sliabh Luachra today. Poetry, storytelling, singing, history and art have all been brought back into the fold. ”This year, on May 19th we are going to host our most ambitious project yet and feature the playing of slow airs with contributions from all the other art forms,”

In his 1993 RTE Radio One documentary, presenter Peter Browne spoke to many of the contemporaries friends and students of the late Pádraig O’Keeffe. In the course of the four-part programme titled, ‘Pádraig O’Keeffe The Sliabh Luachra Fiddle Master,’ people who knew and remembered O’Keeffe remarked on his masterful playing of slow airs. “What inspired this,? ”Was it the Irish language, the poetry of Eoghan Rua Ó Suilleabháin and Aogan Ó Rathille, the songs his mother sang or the rugged terrain of Sliabh Luachra through which he walked every day? “

On Saturday, May 19th at 12 noon, Peter Browne will play his choice of slow air and introduce the question to all participating guests and audience. ”We have invited five great exponents of air playing along with Peter to play a tune of their choosing and tell us why they play it. What in in the name of Sliabh Luachra inspires them to play it? ”After each example of air playing we have six guests from six different art forms who will contribute a piece from their genre. ”They’ll tell us what they draw from Sliabh Luachra that contributes to their creative processes,” The musicians invited include: Peter Browne, Matt Cranitch, Paddy Jones, Jackie Daly, Skip Gorman and Joe Thoma Guest artists: Eileen Sheehan, poetry; Breda Joy, author and journalist; Joe Creedon, sean nos singer; John Reidy, photography / artist; Éamonn Ó Braoin, Irish language historian and Lisa O’Neill, contemporary folk singer/songwriter ”It is anticipated and hoped that the audience will join in on the discussion and contribute where they see fit This is an unique event which we are going to video for the Handed Down Sliabh Luachra Archive so quietness is requested from the audience while filming.
