No stopping the Garveys with latest contribution to CUH

SO grateful was a Foilmore family for the way in which a loved one was treated at Cork University Hospital more than 15-years ago that they decided to raise money for the hospital - a figure which today stands at an incredible €146,158.

Since 2003 John Garvey and his daughters, Clare O’Shea and Maureen Garvey, have devoted an incalculable number of hours to raising funds. They presented the latest instalment of their work - a cheque for €9,357 - to representatives from CUH this week.

“This hospital was very good to my family which is something we’ve never forgotten. We sell tickets and people also sell tickets for us. We’re pleased to play a small part in the great work CUH does,” John said.

This recent contribution will be divided among the Cancer, Neurology, and Cystic Fibrosis Services at the hospital and will be used to enhance patient care by allowing for upgrades to ward facilities across these Units. John and his family have demonstrated all that’s wonderful about rallying to a positive cause, organising and hosting annual benefit dances in aid of CUH.

The Ring of Kerry Hotel in Cahersiveen is the venue for the fundraiser every year and John is keen to emphasise the generosity of the hotel’s proprietors. This year Catherine O’Sullivan took to the stage to make it yet another memorable night, while next year’s event is already schedule for Saturday 5 January 2019 when local man Neilly O’Donnell will be playing.

“We’re happy that we’ve managed to do this over the years, but it’s all thanks to the people who help and support us, especially The Ring of Kerry Hotel in Cahersiveen who give us the venue free of charge. That is very important,” John said.

Damian McGovern, Business Manager at CUH, praised the Garvey family for their ‘huge generosity’. “Cork University Hospital has been able to make significant improvements to facilities that continue to change the lives of our patients for the better,” said Damian.

He thanked the family’s role in this success and also for their continued efforts in aid of the hospital which is one of the biggest and busiest hospitals in the country, covering Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Clare and Kilkenny with an ever growing population needing services.

The CUH Charity was established in early 2012 with the mission of fundraising to provide vital equipment and services for patients attending Cork University Hospital.
