The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Time to sign up for Stephanie O’Sullivan cycle
THE June Bank Holiday weekend has long been associated with the Stephanie O’Sullivan Memorial Cycle but this year the cycle will share the date with the Munster semi-final clash.
To mark the occasion cyclists are being asked to wear their green and gold and the cycle will start at 9am, an hour earlier, to accommodate the Munster semi-final clash so cyclists can get on their bikes ahead of the game and be back in plenty of time to head to Fitzgerald’s stadium.
Since its inauguration in 2012, the cycle event has raised over 75,000 euros that goes directly to local community organisations supporting mental health.
The event was started by Stephanie’s family and friends to raise necessary funds to help build awareness around suicide prevention after the tragic loss of their child Stephanie O’ Sullivan in November 2011.
“The loss of a child in such circumstances drives us on every day and we know with your support we can help other families not to suffer the pain we had to endure,” said Stephanie’s father Dan Joe O’ Sullivan.
“We cannot thank enough the cyclists who come every year and the local volunteers, businesses that support the event with food and refreshments that make it a great event.”
“This year we want to theme our cycle with the Munster semi-final. Kerry footballers bring us so much joy that we would love if people could support the cycle fund raiser in the morning by cycling the 40km or the 80km and wear a piece of green and gold.
“By starting the race at 9am, it will give people plenty of time to go home refreshed, and pull on their full Kerry colours in the afternoon.”
People can also support the Stephanie O’ Sullivan charity in Milltown Credit Union.
